President's Report

By Carol Fuller

The Game’s Afoot

The Democratic Women’s Club held its first endorsement meeting on Saturday, August 27th.  It was well attended and we had a great deal to cover.

We endorsed Measure D, the transportation measure to “Get Santa Cruz County Moving,” as their campaign slogan proclaims. We also made endorsements in the Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Scotts Valley and Capitola City Council races, as well, as in the Santa Cruz Port District, which includes most of the city of Santa Cruz, Live Oak and Capitola, in addition to other smaller areas. You can see all of our endorsements listed below.

Having more than we could cover at our August meeting we have scheduled a second endorsement meeting for Tuesday, September 13, from 6:30-7:30 pm, to vote on local school bond measures in the Santa Cruz City Schools and the Soquel Union Elementary School District. We will also consider other local races, as appropriate. The meeting will be held at Democratic Party headquarters, 740 Front Street, Suite #165, Santa Cruz, (in the Galleria).

On Saturday, September 17, we are fortunate to have John Laird, Secretary of Natural Resources for the State of California, (and local favorite), cover all of the state propositions on the November 8th ballot, 17 in total. Fourteen of these qualified for the ballot by citizen initiatives. John Laird covered the ballot initiatives for the DWC in 2014 and attendees were very glad to have a little help in sorting it all out. The meeting will be held at Louden Nelson Community Center and will start at 10 am.

The Santa Cruz County Democratic Party is sponsoring the taping of this program and cosponsoring the program. The People’s Democratic Club and the Crosson North County Democratic Club are also cosponsors.

As you know, this is a busy time of the year, and we hope to see you at as many events as possible.

Happy Fall!!

REPORT OF ACTION TAKEN AT DWC GENERAL MEETING/ENDORSEMENT FORUM

August 27, 2016, 10 am - 12:30 pm

Santa Cruz County Police Department Community Room

155 Center Street, Santa Cruz, CA

Carol Fuller, President of the Democratic Women’s Club of Santa Cruz County (DWC),  opened the meeting and welcomed the attendees.  197 members were entitled to vote at this forum. Ballots were given to 83 members who attended the forum (20 were needed for a quorum). The number of votes required for endorsement is a simple majority (Article IX of the DWC Bylaws).

Vice President (Programs) Mike Rotkin announced that the DWC Board voted to contribute the following amounts to endorsed candidates and issues on the November 8, 2016 ballot: Measure D ($475), school bonds ($475 total, since there is a unified campaign for both school bonds), Santa Cruz City Council ($350 per candidate), and $100 per candidate for all remaining endorsed candidates. Mike Rotkin moved and Richelle Noroyan seconded to approve the allocations described above. The motion passed by a show of hands of the majority of DWC members present.

Don Lane then spoke in favor of Yes on Measure D (Santa Cruz County Transportation Measure). Bob Morgan spoke in opposition. The membership voted, by a show of hands of the majority of DWC members present, to endorse the measure.

Syda Kosofsky Cogliati then moderated the candidate forum.  The following were endorsed by secret ballots of DWC members collected after each panel:

•   Santa Cruz City Council: J.M. Brown, Cynthia Mathews, Robert Singleton, Martine Watkins. Other participants in the panel were: Sandy Brown, Drew Glover, Chris Krohn, Steve Pleich, and Steve Schnaar.

•   Scotts Valley City Council: Jack Dilles, Rosanna Herrera

•   Capitola City Council: Kristen Peterson

•   Watsonville City Council - District 2: Oscar Rios

Legislative Update

By Maureen McCarty

A message from Sam Farr

College affordability has received a lot of attention this election year and for good reason.  Too many families feel like college is out of reach.  College affordability should be among our country’s highest ideals; every child who aspires to a college degree should be empowered to achieve their goal.  I routinely support a wide spectrum of programs and initiatives, from TRIO and Pell Grants that help low-income students, to making federal aid easier to apply and obtain for middle class families.  Just this past spring, I supported two initiatives that would, first, make financial aid notices available earlier so families have more time to plan ahead and second, inform student borrowers of repayment plans after graduating to prevent loan defaults that affect a borrower’s financial future for years.  In today’s global market, college can no longer be considered a luxury good but a fundamental part of every child’s right to a quality education.  You can count on me to continue fighting towards this goal throughout my tenure in Congress.
