IOU Fall Meeting Wrap-up
 A great fall meeting of the IOU was enjoyed by 81 participants at the Lakeside Lab at Lake Okoboji from Aug. 26th to Aug. 28th. The birding was terrific with a record 155 species recorded including such nice birds as Buff-breasted Sandpiper and King Rail. Our keynote speaker, Kevin Karlson, was a hit and his afternoon presentation on shorebird ID was awesome. His focus on non-plumage ID points for many species was a real eye-opener for beginners and long-time birders alike. For a full report on the meeting, read more on our website.
Consider Participating in a Hawk Watch this Fall
 This will be the 27th year that the Grammer Grove Hawk Watch along the Iowa River has been conducted. Mark Proescholdt is planning on conducting the Hawk Watch Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays from 12 noon and on Saturdays from 10am. Consider calling Mark at 641-496-5219 to let him know that you are planning on participating. Bring a lawn chair, snacks/lunch/drinks and dress appropriately for the weather. Don’t forget a sun hat if it is sunny and dress very warmly if it is brisk or cold out. Grammer Grove does have pit toilet facilities.
Grammer Grove is near Liscomb, Iowa. Basically there is just one entrance road and the Hawk Watch is conducted along that road. Google Map
Mark says September is the best month to come and Broad-winged Hawks should be moving through in numbers starting around Sept 10th.
The Hitchcock Hawkwatch is another important Iowa count location in the Missouri River Flyway. It is open daily from now until December 20th. Raptors (and other migrating birds) are counted from the nature center tower and other sites near the nature center. The Hitchcock Nature Center is located just north of Council Bluffs. Watch for signs along Old Lincoln Highway between the towns of Crescent and Honey Creek. Google Map
