Welcome to our August Newsletter!
 
The Society of St. Yves was founded in 1991 and is working under the patronage of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem to help "the poor and the oppressed" according to the social doctrine of the Catholic Church. St. Yves provides gratis legal assistance, counsel and advocacy to all members of the community, irrespective of race, colour, gender or religion. Through national and international lobby and advocacy we are able to bring the light of the poor and marginalised to the attention of communities around the world in an effort to bring pressure for change.

This month, read about the most important updates on St. Yves work including its recent legal intervention in regards to the health insurance payment imposed by the Israeli Ministry of Health on Palestinians holding a family unification permit, the latest advocacy and capacity building activities, as well as a general update on the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

St. Yves Demands the Israeli Ministry of Health to Cancel Discriminatory Health Insurance Payment Imposed on Palestinians Holding a Family Unification Permit
 
The Israeli Ministry of Health issued regulations on the 1st of August 2016, allowing Palestinians holding family unification permits to access health services with the condition of making a retroactive “initial payment”. If the person applying for family unification holds a “permanent residency”, i.e. Jerusalem ID, his/her partner need to be holding a family unification permit for 27 consecutive months and to pay an “initial payment” of 7,695 NIS to access health services. 
St. Yves sensitisation program regarding people with disabilities 
 
The Society of St. Yves – Catholic Center for Human Rights holds its first sensitisation session in order to develop St. Yves' staff communication skills with people with disabilities as part of "Improving the lives of people with disabilities in East Jerusalem" project.
 
 

St. Yves Observes an Alarming Trend in Demolitions Israeli Authorities Demolish Eight Houses in S’eir/ Hebron



The Israeli forces demolished 8 houses and 2 barns on the morning of Tuesday 16th of august 2016, belonging to the “Shaladah” family in “Joret al Kheil” area in S’eir, near the “Asfr” settlement. The demolition followed a rejection of an appeal presented to the district planning committee in Beit Eil without giving a postponement to petition to the Israeli Supreme Court.
St. Yves hold an awareness raising session in Al Thori
 
St. Yves continues to hold awareness raising sessions regarding issues related to residency, house demolitions, security ban, the rights and entitlements of people with disabilities, widening its target groups and aiming to extend its outreach to communities directly affected and unaware of their social entitlements and legal procedures.

Israel demolishes Palestinian home in East Jerusalem for 6th time in 10 year
Israeli bulldozers on Wednesday demolished a Palestinian family's home in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina -- the sixth time since the family began seeking an Israeli-issued building license more than a decade ago -- amid a massive escalation of demolitions in the city over recent weeks.

Israeli settlers, escorted by Israeli forces, toured the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Wednesday morning, as Israeli police also banned maintenance workers from entering the area.

Israel demolishes multiple Palestinian structures in Jerusalem area
Israeli forces demolished multiple Palestinian structures in the Jerusalem area on Tuesday, the same morning that Israeli-enforced demolitions left more than 70 Palestinians homeless in the Hebron and Bethlehem districts of the occupied West Bank.
Watchdog: Israeli excavations in East Jerusalem seriously damaging Palestinian homes
Palestinian residents of the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan have seen their homes sustain growing damage as a result of Israeli construction in the area, a local watchdog reported on Monday.According to the Wadi Hilweh Information Center, ongoing Israeli excavations in the neighborhood have caused deep fissures to appear or worsen in homes in the Wadi Hilweh area of Silwan.
