Dear d.tech families:

We have been very fortunate to develop some great partnerships during our short history. Of course the first partnership that comes to mind is our great relationship with Oracle, but an often overlooked partnership is the great support we have been receiving from local community colleges, most notably, Skyline College.

I believe that challenges always present opportunities for new relationships and these partnerships are great proof points. Our facility challenge led to a great relationship with Oracle and our world language challenge led to a great relationship with Skyline. Because we work so closely with both Oracle and the community colleges, it is easy to think of them as extensions of d.tech. Please keep in mind though that they are separate entities and they expect a single point of contact from d.tech to help us work together. This means that parents should not contact Oracle or community college staff with program requests and concerns. This is part of our agreement with both organizations.

In particular it’s easy to think of the community college as an extension of d.tech because students take classes from their instructors, but we need everyone to think of it as an extension of college. This means parents should not email instructors with questions about grades or assignments; these queries should come from the students.  Similarly, questions about course offerings and the program should be directed to d.tech staff and not the colleges. I know we all want the same thing, a great education for d.tech students, but it’s really important that we keep consistent communication expectations with our partners so that we can maintain a strong relationship.

Hope you had a great three-day weekend.

Ken

Location: d.tech Hangar at 6:30pm. Doors open at 6pm.

PSAT on October 19
All students (all grades) will need to be ready to take the PSAT on October 19 on campus. Juniors will qualify for the National Merit Scholarship this year. Camping Trip Scheduled for May 3-5, 2017

I want to update everyone that we have decided to keep the camping trip as a spring event.

A quick review: this is a school-wide event which all students and staff attend. We will leave school midday Wednesday, May 3 and return to campus on Friday, May 5. We camp at Casini Ranch at the Russian River.

We are optimistic about getting buses this year because we have the date set so far in advance. We will need parents to help the students and Christy plan this trip! If you already signed up through the Parent Volunteer program to help with this, great! If not, but you’d like to, please enlist at SignUp.com. We need help with prep, planning, transportation, kitchen duties, etc., AND we will need chaperones.

It’s a really fun trip for students, staff and parents! If you have something specific that you think we should be doing or thinking about, or you have a lead on a bus company, please feel free to email me! Thanks in advance! ~ Christy Knott

Reporting Student Absences

Please remember to call or email hholloway@dtechhs.org by 9AM if your child is going to be absent, tardy, or needs an early dismissal. We are trying to minimize daily phone calls to find out if students are absent. An unexcused absence costs d.tech public funding of approximately ~$40/day. Phone: 650-231-2701.

Last week the school experienced a glitch with their phone line. Kudos to the parents who reported their child’s illness (or tardiness) at the Help Desk. Thanks for your patience.

Mandatory Waiver for the Burlingamer, deadline extended to Friday, September 9

We are excited to be continuing our partnership with the Burlingamer Sports Center just a few doors down from d.tech. We will begin using the space for PAB and lunch time on Tuesday, 9/6. In order for your student to use the Burlingamer, they must have a completed waiver on file. We need ALL students to have this done, as we will use the space for classes, intersessions, etc. throughout the year.

If you completed a form last year, or are already a member at the Burlingamer, no need to do anything. Otherwise, please use this link to sign up for a membership to the Burlingamer-- no cost involved!  Once you’ve registered, you will receive an email confirmation, at which point you will read and sign the actual waiver for the Burlingamer. Once you have completed the waiver, you are finished! The Burlingamer will check our student list to see who registered and completed the waiver. No need to turn anything into d.tech.

Any questions, please email Christy Knott, Health & Wellness Coordinator.

Club Pitch and Fair - Thursday, September 8, 2016

d.tech will host its biennial club fair and pitches on Thursday, September 8. As a result, we will run an alternate schedule (with @dtech at the end of the day) to accommodate students who want more information on clubs. Start and end times are the same as any other Thursday. The alternate bell schedule can be found under the "Thu 9/8 Club Fair" tab.

Athletics Corner

Forms and the Athlete/Parent Meeting: On August 30, we hosted over 50 parents and athletes to come meet the fall, winter, and spring coaches and learn more about our Athletic Program. It was a great turnout to launch an exciting year for our program.  As a reminder, all athletes should return their sports forms (see below) to the Front Office ASAP.  Students can pick up the forms in the Front Office as needed.  If you were not able to attend the meeting, please contact our Athletic Director, Earl Grogan, for questions and information regarding tryouts, coaches, or when the season begins! Earl's email isdtechathletics@dtechhs.org.

Volleyball: Volleyball is underway and we are still looking for our Freshmen girls to come out and play!  It is not too late!  Practices are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at Peninsula High School: 300 Piedmont Ave in San Bruno. It doesn't matter what skill level you are; we are looking to launch our program this year and have some fun!

Girls Soccer: Currently, we are looking to find some awesome girls soccer players who want to play in the winter season.  This is incredibly exciting for dtech as we are hoping to get some games on the schedule.  If there are any girls (9-11 graders) interested, please have them fill out the survey (it is also located on the dtech Announcements page).  We are also looking for a Girls Soccer coach!  Contact Earl Grogan for more information.

Any questions?  Contact Melissa Mizel (Athletics Supervisor) at mmizel@dtechhs.org. GO DRAGONS!

Sports Participation Forms & Survey

One more time with feeling. All students are required to complete a physical exam and submit the three forms BEFORE joining a team. Complete your exam during the summer to get a head start. Forms needed: 1) Health Screening Form, 2) Informed Consent Form, and 3) Sports Medical Form. The Health Screen Form is valid for one calendar year (from the date it was signed by your physician).

“Prove-It” Assignment for 9th & 10th graders due this Wednesday, September 7 (11th graders - due in October)

Parents, to help you understand the plan for holding students accountable for their 200+ minutes each week, please read the PE and Athletics Program Overview. This is the more detailed version of what I explained to ALL students at our first community meeting two weeks ago, and what I told parents at Back to School Night. I have also gone over this with all 9th graders in detail when I was teaching in their Econ classes a couple times during the last two weeks. The document linked here explains everything. Please read it and check in with your student if you still have questions, or email Christy Knott.  -Christy, Health & Wellness Coordinator

Outside Classes, Activities, and Intersession Classes

We are eager to help students find other classes/activities to join. We will continue to pass along these non-d.tech-sponsored activities to the d.tech community. If you have an idea or would like to share what your student does, please email Christy Knott. I would love to receive “guest passes” from local gyms, clubs, etc. to share with our students. If you’re able to secure any of these, please send them to me.

-Christy, Health & Wellness Coordinator

Design Tech High School does not endorse any of these programs. Students and families are responsible for evaluating the benefit of participation for themselves:

Co-Ed, No-Audition Children's Choir named, VOENA, is coming to San Mateo!

An amazing opportunity to participate in a celebration of culture, sound, color, voice and humanity. VOENA Children's Choir is a professional program, unique because of its no-audition policy. VOENA teaches children ages 8-18 ethnically diverse music, instilling in them an appreciation and enthusiasm for different languages and cultures while cultivating, what director Annabelle Marie calls, the VOENA BIG 3: 1) accept the challenge, 2) be self-motivated, and 3) embrace an ethic for hard work. VOENA participants sing music from many countries, all in the native language, promoting peace through the exchange of culture. Rehearsals every other Thursday, beginning September 8 from 4:15-5:45pm. Questions? Contact VOENA's San Mateo site liaison, Becca Ackerman.

Stepping Stones Project

The Stepping Stones Project's mission is to guide and support youth through long-term mentoring and contemporary rites of passage. One group for 13- & 14-yr-olds will begin Sept 2016. During this time, youth leave the complete dependence of childhood to take their place fully on the road toward adulthood. SSP creates a much needed support system, for youth and their parents, providing opportunities to fully explore this important transition. If interested in Rite of Passage for your children, please visit SSP website. Questions? Contact Becca Ackerman.
