New pain relief for sheep
Approved: A new oral liquid pain relief product for sheep has been approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) for the alleviation of pain associated with tail-docking and castration.

Ilium Buccalgesic OTM is approved for use on sheep at any age, and an additional registration for its use when mulesing lambs is hopefully not too far away, with outstanding results achieved in completed CSIRO trials.

The dosage rate for sheep is 1mg/kg liveweight (lwt), with an estimated dose cost of around 48 cents for animals under 10kg lwt, about 72 cents for 10–15kg lwt and about 96 cents for 15–20kg lwt lambs.

New site and opportunities
Presentations online: The CSIRO Chiswick Field Station near Armidale in Northern NSW has been announced as the successful candidate site to host the 4th Merino Lifetime Performance (MLP) project flock, following a national expression of interest process.

The AWI-funded MLP project is a $4m, 10-year partnership between AWI, the Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association, and participating stud Merino breeders and site hosts around Australia, which aims to increase the understanding of the genetic capacity for the Merino ewe to deliver high quality wool, lambs and meat throughout its life.

Up to 135 sires are to be joined to 90 ewes to generate the F1 ewe progeny that will form the basis of the project. At the conclusion of the standard sire evaluation at 1.5 to 2 years of age, AWI will support the ongoing measurement and visual classing of all F1 ewe progeny through four to five joinings and annual shearings.

By exploring the impact of selecting rams and ewes using early age performance, the MLP is fine-tuning genetic selection processes and providing confidence in breeding and selection approaches.

Worms, flies and lice
Tasmanian report: When there's water lying around, there's always a high risk of black scour worm infections.

With the pre-lambing drench strategies now in place, it’s time to plan for the weaning paddocks.

Lamb survival workshops
Register now!: Our popular Lamb survival workshops are being run again this year, and are for anyone interested in understanding the causes of lamb deaths and how to maximise lamb survival.

Workshops are being run at Swansea on Thursday 22 and Beaufront, Ross on Friday 23 September.

The workshops will include observing and carrying out lamb post mortems with Bruce Jackson (DPIPWE) to determine the likely cause of death, and hearing Jason Trompf (JT Agrisource) talk about managing ewe nutrition to maximise lamb survival, matching feed supply and demand, and optimising mob size for lambing.

Footrot research survey
Improve disease control: La Trobe University PhD candidate Nickala Best is undertaking research into improved on-farm footrot diagnostic tools, and is seeking feedback from sheep producers as part of a national survey.

The research could also lead to the development of a new framework for field testing and diagnosis of other diseases.

The survey covers attitudes towards current footrot diagnostic methods, and how new methods might be best implemented to improve disease control.

MLA: Trinity Experiment
Nutritionally balanced?: It was a secret 30-year experiment that never should have happened.

Identical triplets, separated at birth, raised on different diets. To prove what, exactly?
