Sports & Development Newsletter - October
Welcome
Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to the autumn edition of the Sport and Development Newsletter!

Since the last edition of the Newsletter, we have passed the 'one year to go mark' for the 2017 National Summer Games.  This is a big focus for all of us and right now you are hopefully collating all your entry and rating scores for your National Games athletes.  However we are also thinking about the next generation of Special Olympics' athletes and volunteers and we're pleased to bring you an update on our exciting Play Unified partnership project with Youth Sport Trust.

Best wishes,

Andy Heffer
Director of Sports & Development

Meet a New Member of the Team!
Emma joined the Special Olympics GB Team in July 2016 as the National Training Manager and will oversee and manage all the training needs of the organisation.
She has a passion for developing and training staff and volunteers and is currently studying towards her CIPD in Learning and Development. Emma is looking forward to taking on this role and working as part of Special Olympics GB.

Emma is happy to be contacted directly to discuss anything related to training and ideas and suggestions are always welcome:

Emma is looking to speak to as many volunteers as possible about their training needs and experiences. She has created a short training survey and we would be very grateful if you could take the time to complete the survey. The information gathered will be used to design and build future training material for all our volunteers.

Learn More About Play Unified!
Play Unified is a Special Olympics International youth led advocacy campaign. The initiative is being led across Great Britain in partnership with Youth Sport Trust to help end the injustice, intolerance and inactivity of young people with an intellectual disability by building a unified generation through sport.

Through the campaign, 7 summits have been held, engaging 453 Play Unified Young Leaders and 175 schools.

Delegation Volunteers at National Competitions

This is a reminder that all volunteers coming with a regional team to National Competitions must be registered with Special Olympics GB and have a valid CRB/DBS disclosure - this is a legal requirement, This includes all volunteers who are coming as part of a delegation - even if they don't have duty of care.

The National Executive Council has agreed that the closing date for all Special Olympics GB National Competitions will be at least six week prior to the event and that any delegation volunteers who are not registered and who do not have a valid disclosure will not be able to volunteer at the event.

Please also not that Special Olympics GB policy is that a CRB disclosure is now valid for three years, rather than two.
Special Olympics Great Britain's Alcohol Policy
We have realised that there is some confusion over the Special Olympics GB policy on alcohol.  This is that no member of Special Olympics (athlete or coach/escort) may consume alcohol at any time while Special Olympics has duty of care for athletes.  This therefore applies not only during training or competition but also – for instance – at social functions after a competition has finished.

Event organisers are responsible for ensuring that this policy is adhered to at competitions and the person with lead responsibility for each delegation must ensure that each member of the delegation is aware of and abides by the policy.

If you have any questions please contact Andy.Heffer@sogb.org.uk

Multi-Sport Activity Festival to conclude the London Project
In 2014, Special Olympics Great Britain, were funded by the Greater London Authority to deliver a project aimed at developing the training and competition pathway in the Capital. This initiative has given more athletes with a learning disability the opportunity to compete and participate in their chosen sport. London, for a long time, has been under represented and this project has allowed us to bring the region up to speed with the rest of the country in terms of people involved with Special Olympics.

The project was a huge success!  Over the course of the 3 years 16 new clubs/networks were developed with 2772 participants taking part in Special Olympics activity. Of these 2772 participants 43% were regular participants attending 9 or more sessions over a 12 week period. A key milestone within the project was to engage a percentage of participants who have not previously taken part in sporting activity (33%). We exceeded this target engaging with 42% in-actives.

The challenge is now to move these 2772 participants to registered Special Olympics members, and ensure these athletes have access to competition opportunities in the sport(s) they choose. To ensure the competitions are delivered on a regional level we are currently in the process of reforming the London Region to cope with the demand.

Following on from the success of this project, Special Olympics Great Britain are organising a Multi-Sport Activity Festival.
