Adaptation of viticulture to climate change

Newsletter n ° 2

Temperature sensors networks in the vineyards of the LIFE-ADVICLIM project.

The temperature sensor networks were installed in 6 experimental vineyards of the LIFE-ADVICLIM project. A total of 240 sensors (90 in Saint Emilion, Pomerol (France), 60 in the Loire Valley (France), 30 in Rudesheim (Rheingau, Germany), 17 Rock Lodge East Sussex (UK), 18 Cotnari (Romania) and 25 in La Rioja (Spain)) can acquire thermal data every hour. Bioclimatic indices are calculated with these data, and they also allow us to supply our agro-climatic models (temperature and phenological stages) across the vineyards in the context of climate change.

Val de Loire

Vineyards in the wine-producing areas of the Coteaux du Layon and Saumur-Champigny have been equipped with a network of agro-environmental monitoring devices. These two areas, producing dry or sweet white wines and red or rosé wines respectively, are representative of the contrasting landscapes and geological features of the Loire Valley.

Vineyards for Heat

Vilafranca del Penedès is responsible for the Vineyards Heat project with Life program supported by the European Commission.

The aim is to promote the use of leftover biomass from vine pruning of the Penedès to generate decentralized bioenergy, by reducing CO2 emissions, bringing down energy bills and creating work places by implementing the virtuous Circle of Vine (VVC).
