A Chat About Cars & Racing

In a fun and casual interview with Garth for the popular car and racing blog, Jalopnik, fellow author, Naveed Jamali, leads a conversation about Garth's cars and racing experiences.

"I went racing one rainy day in August, and the zebra got in with me! [...] I was fine but the car was destroyed. Afterward, I called my wife and said, 'the good news is I’m fine but the bad news is the car is totaled.' She replied, 'and the good news is you’re retired.'" — Garth Stein

On The Road

This summer kicked off with Authors Night, a lavish fundraiser featuring a wide array of super-famous authors (most notably, of course, Garth Stein) and benefitting the East Hampton Library. Then, off to Bumbershoot! Hugo House hosted Garth as a part of their "Ask the Oracle" panel. The event invited readers to tweet their questions and, fate willing, they would be proffered to the panelists for their valuable insights.

Much of Garth's summer has been spent, perhaps predictably, in front of the computer. In addition to his regular work, though, Garth has been Skyping with dozens of book clubs across the country about A Sudden Light and with a high school in New Brunswick that used The Art of Racing in the Rain as its campus reads selection.

Seattle7Writers Holiday Bookfest!

Think about holiday shopping. Imagine malls. Parking. Crowds. Now imagine a Saturday afternoon in November, walking up the deliciously worn wooden steps of the Phinney Neighborhood Center to find a boutique bookstore, created especially by a local indie bookstore. Imagine encountering not only books, but the authors who wrote them — signing, chatting, reading (and sometimes even singing). And all the while you can nibble on fresh-baked goods, created by the authors themselves. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Bureau of Fearless Ideas (formerly 826 Seattle) and the PNA, so you can indulge your bookishness and help two good causes, all at the same time. Details at seattle7writers.org.

Movie Update

Garth’s film agent, who is famous for his cryptic email messages, recently wrote:

“Fox2000 is close to putting a film together.  Don’t lose faith.”

Heh. Easy for him to say…
