POW Night for Parents
Thursday, September 15th
6:30 - 8:00 pm
IVA Social Hall (through the glass doors once you cross the labyrinth)

New families please come and join our math teachers Ms. Cari Noble and Ms. Deborah Chen to learn how to help your student with mathematics at IVA.

POWs are Problems of the Week(s) and are assigned in math class to support the mathematical practices that are asked of students. These are difficult extended problems that require students to problem-solve, communicate math in writing, and practice the difficult intellectual virtues of autonomy and tenacity. Come learn how to support your students!

This is a parent-only event! (we don't want to give away the answers! Please don't bring your students so that the teachers can guide you on how to help your kids without giving them the answers;)

Get involved and support your school at the upcoming Benefit Gala on October 8th from 6pm to 10pm at IVA. We are looking to our amazing parents to bring in Silent and Live Auction items to help our school raise the money needed to provide excellent and innovative education to our students. If you have any contacts or wish to volunteer please email Stephanie Robinette or call her at 310.367.3528.
Pick-up & Drop-off on Elm
It can get congested during the first few weeks of school and can be dangerous for students. Our staff is out there to support a safe entry and exit to school but parents can help too.

Parents:
  • Please drive to a curb to pick up your child (Elm street has a lot of available space right after 37th street). Consider making a plan with your child to have a pick up location.
  • Encourage students to cross at the stop sign only. Elm is a thin street and with all the traffic it is hard to see students walking across the street.
  • Volunteers Needed! We are looking for a small group of parents to help direct traffic before and after school. If you are interested please email Diana Bosetti and she will help coordinate your support.
Counselor's Corner : School of Choice
As our new 8th graders are still settling in, they are already looking towards their next goal: high school! We have received many questions pertaining to high school shadow days, application deadlines, and info nights. Those dates have not been confirmed.

We have been in communication with Jennifer Brown, Administrator of School of CHOICE, who will notify us of those dates when available. As soon as that happens, we will share this information directly with our families.
From the Office
Will You Write a Letter of Support?
We'd love to share with our Charter authorizer, LBUSD, what IVA has meant to you, your student, and your family. Would you consider writing a letter? Our requested deadline is Monday, September 26. If interested, please send an email to Danielle Montiel. Thank you for considering!

IVA PE department requests loaner clothes!
Do you have clothes (shorts, shirts, athletic shoes) to donate? The PE department will keep a bin of PE clothes to loan. Please bring your donations to your PE teacher. Thank you!

Attendance Reminders
If your student is absent, please send an email to attendance@ivalongbeach.org
If your student needs to arrive late or leave early, please sign our office log. Please bring a doctor or dentist excuse note if relevant.
If you'll be absent for more than one day, please consider an Independent Study plan. Email Diana Bosetti to begin your plan.

Dress Code, Cell Phones, Tardies, and Blacktop Behaviors
We are tracking these minor infractions beginning this week. A reminder - although we love to support our sister school, The Academy HS, these tees are not considered IVA Spirit Wear.
From Our Principal
With less than one week of school under way we are in a super honeymoon phase on campus. Our staff love our new students and our students are slowly learning to navigate a new system but are feeling safe and supported

We are supporting our students by requiring office hours to learn more about our resources:

Wednesday, Aug. 31 - 6th graders were introduced to the idea of Office Hours
  • Office Hours are an open 20 minutes a day after the first block when students can elect to see their teachers to retake assignments, ask questions, and check in. All teachers are available at office hours to work with smaller groups of students. We encourage students to choose to come to Office Hours to learn how to communicate directly with teachers and get a chance to practice virtues in caring about their own learning. When a student seeks understanding they are practicing intellectual thoroughness and intellectual carefulness. When a student asks a question that they are scared to ask in front of their peers they are practicing intellectual courage.
    • Families - please help us out! Teachers and staff encourage students to attend Office Hours as a first point of contact. If a student sends and email to a teacher the teachers will ask the student to come and talk with them in person and utilize the intervention resources we provide during the school day. This can help to protect teachers' time and efficiency in communicating with many students and can help students to develop a relationship with their teachers.
Thursday, Sept. 1 - 6th graders were introduced to Google Classroom and IVA Email
  • Teachers use Google Classroom with some variety but in general to post assignments, class notes, and enrichment ideas. This is the first point of resource that students have at home.
    • Families - If your child comes home and says, "I have no idea what we did today." Be encouraged to know that this is a normal middle school response - it is developmentally appropriate and you are in good company.
      • You can support your kids by asking them to log into their Google Classroom and see what has been happening in class and whether there are any assignments.
      • If they still don't know what to do or what is going on then have them pull out their planner and write in it for them to attend Office Hours to get clarity from their teachers.
  • Students need their IVA Email to log into Google Classrooms. IVA emails are only for school and accounts will be suspended if they create a google profile or use their email for an app. IVA Emails can communicate with other IVA domain emails. This means that teachers can email students and vice versa but parents cannot email their own kids.

Students can login to Google Classroom here

Tuesday, Sept 6. - all new students introduction to Illuminate
  • Illuminate is our online student information system which includes attendance tracking, schedules, and graded assignments. In order to have students focus on the feedback teachers give they might not put assignment grades on the papers themselves but on Illuminate. To see our school-wide instructional policies look on the curriculum and instruction page. We are working to update our syllabi and course descriptions there as well.
    • Families - you can select to be notified when your child receives a certain grade on any assignment. Please make sure to talk to your student and have them talk to their teacher first before contacting teachers. We want to equip our students to take responsibility for their assignments and learn how to seek out resources. A helpful role for parents in middle school is as apprentice - working alongside your student to know how to check the support systems in place.

Setting Up an After-School Homework Co-Op in Cal Heights/Bixby Knolls
Fellow IVA parents: So far, two sixth-grade IVA families who live in Cal Heights are interested in establishing an after-school homework co-op in Cal Heights/Bixby Knolls. Email me if you are interested in participating in a co-op idea like this that would involve opening your home one day per week. A few more families and this is a go!

Best regards,
