Please turn in Pledge Commitment and Parent Participation Forms to the office. Every family’s contribution is crucial in maintaining SunRidge’s quality Waldorf Education.
Student's Walking or Biking From School?
The school is responsible for the safety of your children until they are released to you each day. If you wish to allow your child to walk or ride their bike home or to some other designated after-school location, we will need you to fill out the form that is in your first day packet.
LCFF Supplemental Funding Survey Due September 15th
As a public school, SunRidge is eligible to receive additional state funding in support of its academic and enrichment programs for the 2016-17 school year only if your family’s income meets the federal income eligibility criteria (click here for further explanation). Click here to see if your family income meets the income criteria shown on this document. If so, please click here to access the form to complete and return to the SunRidge School office by September 15, 2016.
Communications
Our primary means for communicating important information to parents is through this Weekly Bulletin. We send it out by email if you are on our email list, and provide hard copies outside the office if email doesn’t work for you. You can also download and/or view a copy of the bulletin on our website. Please read the bulletin every week in order to stay informed, and if you change your email address, let us know!
Appreciations
The SunRidge Educational Foundation funded several beautification projects this summer. Many thanks go to Robert Simmons, Foundation President, who was the liaison with Permaculture Artisans. He kept communication flowing as new logs were needed and new issues were addressed to ensure the project was completed before school began.

And have you noticed the beautiful color on the bulletin boards in the hallways? Nell Hergenrather repaired, primed, painted and/or lazured most of the bulletin boards as well as several classroom bulletin boards, in addition to lazuring the kindergarten rooms (with Robert Holden.) We are so appreciative of Nell's many hours creating the uplifting colors now evident in so many places.
Welcome Alex!
Alex Volonts comes to SunRidge as the new Instrumental Music Instructor with a strong background in musical training and a love for teaching. Alex received a Bachelor’s of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His vision is to develop the technical abilities of each student, while promoting creativity and self-expression. He hopes to give his students a chance to feel and understand the joys of music along with a strong sense of accomplishment. Alex is currently a member of the Santa Rosa Symphony and can be heard in concert/seen on stage. There will be several performance opportunities available to the students at SunRidge. We are very excited to have Alex as a part of the SunRidge community!
Kindergarten Yard Needs
We are in need of 40 redwood stumps 10”-16” in diameter, and 16”-20” long. If you have some or all please call the school office.

Welcome Klaus!
Klaus Dilling is excited to be joining the SunRidge community as the new Woodworking Instructor. Klaus is a creative and innovative life-long learner with a passion for designing, creating, building and educating. His career has afforded him the opportunity to work as a fine furniture woodworker and stair builder. More recently, he has enthusiastically undertaken a career teaching woodworking to middle school students. As a candidate for a Masters in Education at Sonoma State University, he has endeavored to leverage his experience as an inventor to design a curriculum for Creativity, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. No matter what the challenge, he believes that his greatest strength is his ability to bring technical skill and an unwavering curiosity to the task at hand. We are happy to welcome Klaus into our SunRidge community!

School Portraits Fundraiser Coming Up!
It’s that time of the year for school portraits! Portrait dates are as follows:
  • Tuesday, September 20th: Grades 1st – 4th
  • Wednesday, September 21st: Grades 5th – 8th
  • Thursday, September 22nd: Kinder and Faculty Photo
  • Homeschool Date TBD
  • Wednesday, October 12th: Make-up/Retake Day
Below are a few reminders regarding Picture Day from Mariah Smith who will be our photographer again this year:
  • In an effort to make the ordering process more streamlined, with less errors (on my part – sorry for those!), and less time consuming for our volunteers, we need all order forms turned in on or prior to portrait day. You can send forms into your child’s teacher early. There is now a late fee of $20 added to orders turned in late. This late fee will cover my lab’s minimum order requirement.
  • In the same spirit, please use one order form, and one payment PER child. We tried the sibling payment option and it turned into a very time consuming mess for us. I apologize for the inconvenience this will cause but please understand that I donate about 40 hours of my time to this and any little help I can get from you will keep this fantastic fundraiser going & super successful!!
  • In the past 2 years, we’ve raised over $20,000 for the school so thank you, thank you!! I’m definitely looking forward to seeing all your wonderful kids again!!

Parent Education Committee -- Call for Ideas and Volunteers!
The Parent Education Committee (PEC) is forming for the current school year and seeking new members, and parents who want to share ideas. PEC provides educational opportunities for SunRidge School parents and community members relating to Waldorf education, parenting and family life.

PEC provides a forum for parents to come together to explore the values underlying our shared identity by serving the parent body with informative, engaging, and participatory activities and events. The PEC fosters the weaving of a vibrant SunRidge community by building a supportive parent body that is aware of the developmental philosophy and academic program of our school. The Parent Education Committee offers a variety of programs throughout the school year, which has included guest speakers, panel discussions, films and book study pairings.

To share ideas or express interest in the working with the committee, please contact PEC member Adrienne Bramhall at adrienne_bramhall@yahoo.com or 805-587-1275.  And watch this space for announcement of our first meeting later this month (generally held after drop-off in the faculty lounge). Thank you!

After School Homework Support
After school homework support is for 6th-8th graders and provides a quiet place to study. A permission slip for students & parents to review and sign is necessary to provide contact information for any student who plans to stay after school and participate in the Homework Support Program.

This program is available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 3:15-4pm and is supervised by middle school faculty. The program meets on Mondays in the 7th grade classroom, Tuesdays in the 8th grade classroom, and Wednesdays in the 6th grade classroom. This is a free program; we require that students sign in and quietly work on class assignments or homework. We encourage students to bring an extra snack to eat between school’s dismissal and the start of the program. In order for this program to be possible, prompt pick-up of students is essential (4pm Mon-Wed). Additional support is offered by Curt regarding math concepts and homework during lunch recess on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Learning Math
Week #2:  Always be encouraging and never tell kids they are wrong when they are working on math problems. Instead find the logic in their thinking – there is always some logic to what they say. For example if your child multiplies 3 by 4 and gets 7, say – Oh I see what you are thinking, you are using what you know about addition to add 3 and 4, when we multiply we have 4 groups of 3...

Handwork News
The year is underway! It's a busy time for all of us. In just one week this is what we are doing:
  • 1st graders are making knitting needles, sanding them so gently on the wall outside of their classroom.
  • 2nd graders have made their needles and soon will be rolling balls of yarn to cast on for a flute case.
  • 3rd graders are learning how to crochet. Much different than knitting!
  • 4th graders are designing their patterns on graph paper for a cross stitch project.
  • 5th graders are knitting i-cord with double pointed needles they made.
  • 6th graders are designing and cutting out felt for a shield that they will wear on their tunic for the medieval games.
  • 7th graders are hand sewing Japanese pillows that will be filled with rice hulls.
  • 8th graders are learning the history of the sewing machine and the parts of an electric machine.
  • Homeschoolers are either learning to knit or knitting!
Using our busy hands, warm hearts and creative minds we experience the joys of Handwork together!

I want to give a big thank you to:
  • Dale Thurber for many skeins of yarn he donated from his mother!
  • Cari Hernandez for all the supplies she and her mother donated...Felt, fabric, ribbon and more...
  • Kate Farley for all the beautiful yarn.
With gratitude,
Ms. Mckenzie
