Dan Fleetham

1912 - 2016

Dan Fleetham, an icon of Canaan, passed away after being part of Canaan for 104 years. Dan was born in February of 1912 at a time when his family was operating the Cobb House Hotel on Canaan Street. Dan was in engaged in a wide variety of occupations during his life. One of his most well known roles was as municipal judge in Canaan. He also served on the faculty of Cardigan Mountain School for a period of time. His community participation was legendary. Some can remember his work with the Boy Scouts.  In just the last decade or so he was a legionnaire at the Weld-Webster Post 55, a Curator at the Canaan Museum, a member of the Lions, a Mason, the Clock winder at the Meeting House, and perhaps the most famous service was as a meals on wheels driver up until age 102 bringing meals and friendship to many who were much younger than he was.

Dan was active, opinionated, involved and will be missed.

Thanks to the 20 people who showed up on August 27 and again on September 3 to cut trees and brush on the Mascoma Community Health Center site on Roberts Road. Looks great !

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What are the most significant contributors to road failure?
A. The two most significant contributors to road failure are the environment (most significantly due to moisture in and around the road) and traffic (most significantly due to abrasion loss and surface deformation). Soils that become as hard as a rock and so highly water repellent that they are effectively waterproof create surfaces that last upwards of 10 years with little or no maintenance.
Q. What is Bionic Soil and how can bionic soil additive help reduce the mud on dirt roads in the spring?
A. Bionic Soil is a revolutionary soil technology called “Lithification.” (The process in which soil is transformed into rock).  This technology can be used to improve dirt roads. It prevents dirt from absorbing water that creates mud.
Q. If a road is treated with Bionic Soil is it smooth?
A. Yes.
Q. Can Bionic Soil roads be dug up again for repairs?
A. Yes using a backhoe or excavator. After repairs are made, the replaced soil may be treated again and again become like rock.
Q. How soon after construction of the surface of a dirt road is the road ready for traffic?
A. Immediately after the construction of the surface for a dirt road, it is ready for use by traffic.
Q. How many years will a road last when treated with Bionic Soil Solutions’ products?
A. Roads treated with Bionic Soil won’t degrade with rain or run-off.
Q. What are the treated roads like in Mud Season?
A. They are hard and dry since they shed water.
Q. Do the soils of treated roads present any danger to ground water and the environment?
A. Bionic Soil Solutions’ products present no danger to the environment because they are non-toxic and do not leach or migrate out of the soil. They are green and 100% environmentally friendly.
Q. How does soil treated with Bionic Soil Solution react to variations in temperature?
A. Variations in temperature have no effect on Bionic Soil Solutions’ products.
 Q. What is the load bearing capacity of roads treated with Bionic Soil Solutions’ products?
A. The treated road structure is virtually indestructible, even under adverse conditions. The load bearing capacity increases over time with use.

We are thinking about trying this option next year.

LATE NEWS! We were encouraged by a Verizon service representative for government accounts to put in an emergency work order with Verizon to increase cell service in Canaan, in part to allow for better emergency communication. Part of the proof of need is the high reliance on wireless repeaters in Canaan. That work order went in on Friday. Every complaint helps.

WE NEED A CELL PHONE COMPANY TO AGREE TO USE A LOCAL TOWER

Take these points. Write a letter or send an email with your own story about why this refusal to offer service through towers that someone else is ready to build is unacceptable. The towers can be here now. The land is leased. The capital is available to build. Where’s the willingness to serve the customers living here who already pay for service but don’t get it? Get angry and share your anger with elected officials.
There is no safety for children.
There is no business communication available.
Commuters have no data access or safety net.
Visitors have to leave to talk then come back to play.
There is no emergency communications network.
There are 6,000 to 10,000 potential customers or current customers upset about sub-standard service.
Statements about no tower linkage or lack of capital for construction or permitting problems are hogwash. All of that is available.
It looks like Verizon and US Cellular just don’t care.

Make them care. Complain. Make it personal.

THESE ARE THE FACTS:
  • Two tower companies are ready to build the towers using their own cash. Both of the companies would link to existing towers to the west of us and could link to the tower to the east of us.
  • Arguments by carriers that the capital investment is too great or there is no connecting tower coverage or that local permits are too difficult just don’t hold up anymore.
  • Either or both tower companies need a contract with Verizon and/or US Cellular to offer coverage.
  • We have 4,000 residents in Canaan and more than half have no cell phone reception. None of the Canaan Village area has cell phone coverage.
  • The police mobile communications and data system relies on cell coverage. The Town of Canaan relies on cell service for emergency communications. The five Town owned facilities now rely on internet based cell relays. The Department heads rely on the same system.
  • Some businesses rely on the same internet repeater system. All internet repeaters are useless if Comcast is not in service. This defeats the use of cellular service for emergency communication.
  • In efforts to recruit new business, the single greatest impediment is the lack of cell service. Internet is now available to all primary development areas including the Route 118 corridor. Business users rely on cell phone data services for research as well as voice and data transfer. Smart phones are used to access all office records from any location with cell phone coverage but are useless in Canaan. Canaan MotorClub is a brand new 1.4 mile high speed road racing track that has more than 4,000 visitors annually. Their participants are generally working business people who require effective cellular service. So now they commute to Lebanon or even Concord for accommodations while racing at the track. The track will soon be in a position where they must bring in a portable transmitter to compensate for the poor service by the carriers.
  • 6,000 cars pass through Canaan Village daily. None can get any cell service.
  • 1,000 public school children travel in Canaan every school day. While most have cell phones, they can’t rely on cell service to communicate with parents or for safety. Stranded kids or kids in trouble have no communication safety net even though their parents pay for cell service that can only be used in the larger communities of Lebanon, White River or Hanover.
  • People traveling through the area that are stranded or are in accidents have no way to reach out for help. Route 4 is the only east-west corridor south of Saint Johnsbury, VT and north of Claremont, NH (unless you are a diagonal type of person).
  • People needing rescue services or fire services have no way to call for help if a land line is not readily available. The delays in communication may well cost lives.

Sunday, 10 AM to 1 PM - Canaan Green
