Greetings from the CTL!

Hello!

I hope your semester is going well. It's getting close to mid-term time, so your grading load might be picking up. That's why I am highlighting an upcoming workshop on assessment, which will provide information about how to integrate formative assessment into your course, to find out what your students know before you get to the mid-term exam. The formative assessment techniques can also be used as Active Learning strategies in your class - so you'll be ready for Active Learning Day on Oct. 25! This newsletter includes information about that effort, and also highlights the work of Vickie Gooch, an adjunct in the Department of Criminal Justice.

In addition to the resources listed in this newsletter, there are many resources online to help support your teaching. One of these is the ELIXR website (http://elixr.merlot.org/) which offers a digital case story repository that hosts discipline-specific multimedia stories. All the stories are brief, applied, and demonstrate exemplary teaching practices for a particular topic.  You’ll find digital case stories on various topics such as Active Learning Strategies, Small Groups, Integrative Learning, Knowledge Surveys, Creativity, and Just in Time Teaching to name a few.

Let me know if you use something from this site in your class, and feel free to be in touch with me at any time should you have questions about teaching at Boise State.

Happy teaching!

Best,

Upcoming Workshop: Assessing Student Learning

You prepare your classes, create your assignments, and deliver your content. But how do you know if students really “get it”? How do you know if they were even prepared for class? In this workshop, you’ll learn how classroom assessment techniques (or CATs) can help you to gauge students’ prior knowledge and determine how well they understand course material. You’ll also discover how using CATs can bring active learning to your classroom. Examples of these assessment strategies, which are quick and easy to implement, will be provided.

This workshop will take place on October 26 from 12-1:30 in ILC 315. To register, please click this link or visit https://ctl.boisestate.edu/workshop-and-event-calendar/. Please note: Free parking is available to adjuncts attending this event! Please email ctl@boisestate.edu to get the code.

Active Learning Day!

The Office of Science and Technology Policy (Advisor to the Obama Administration/The White House) has announced October 25th will be “Active Learning Day" nationwide. We would like to demonstrate Boise State's commitment to quality undergraduate education and the broader implementation of active learning strategies by participating in this event.

Teaching faculty from across the country are being challenged to incorporate at least 10 minutes of active learning in their course on October 25th. We would like you to join us in this effort by committing to use an active learning strategy for at least 10 minutes in your class on October 25th. If you don’t teach on the 25th, we encourage you to participate by incorporating 10 minutes of active learning in your class on the 24th or 26th instead.

Please help us document Boise State’s participation in this event by completing the linked google form.  If you would like to participate in Active Learning Day, but don’t have a particular active learning strategy in mind, I would be happy to talk with you about ideas.

For more information about Active Learning Day, please contact Brittnee Earl (brittneeearl@boisestate.edu).

Have a student that is falling behind? Use Academic Alert!

The Academic Alert referral service is a resource for faculty to request academic support for students who are struggling academically.  Following a referral, an academic advisor in the student’s college will reach out to the student via phone or email with the goal of scheduling an in-person meeting and/or connecting the student to support resources.  Examples of when to submit an academic alert include: missing an unreasonable amount of classes, notable poor performance, or low engagement in the classroom. For step by step instructions on how to submit an alert and the process that occurs once an alert is submitted please visit https://aae.boisestate.edu/academicalert/. If you would like to submit an academic alert please use this link: https://aae.boisestate.edu/early-alert-form/ . Students will be notified from whom and why the referral was made on their behalf. Any information you provide may be shared with the student. As such, observations should be objectively stated.

Ensuring student success is important to every faculty member, and by submitting this form, you are helping with the process. For any questions about Academic Alerts please call 208-426-3505  or email Karina Smith at karinasmith@boisestate.edu.

Adjunct Spotlight: Vickie Gooch

Vickie Gooch is completing her 13th year of teaching in the Department of Criminal Justice at Boise State, but her relationship with the University extends back even further; she graduated from Boise State's program in Criminal Justice Administration in 1985. She currently teaches Criminalistics, but has also taught Contemporary Issues in American Policing, Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, Introduction to Policing, Theories of Justice and Criminal Law.

Vickie brings a lot of experience to her job as teacher; she has worked in policing for the last 36 years, the last 18 of which as a detective for the Idaho State Police. Combining her love of both professions is one of the things she likes most about teaching. "The thing I most enjoy about teaching is the energy of the students and their desire to not only learn, but apply their Criminal Justice degrees at some future point as practitioners in the system.   It is encouraging to see the potential in the classroom as it relates to that potential transferring to a system, a system  many of  us have professionally grown up in as well as continue to be employed.  Teaching brings me a balance between my policing career and the ability to give back to the CJ program where it all began for me in 1980."
