As we face the end of the summer and look towards fall, we recognize September as National Preparedness Month (NPM). The recent flooding disaster in the Baton Rouge area serves as an all too vivid reminder that disaster can strike at any time and does not discriminate. In an article on nola.com, retired Lt. Gen. Russell Honoré states, "projections don't take into account the 40 percent failure rate of small businesses after going through a natural disaster. Some 7,300 small businesses suffered flood damage in the past week." While the numbers Honoré cites come from the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, they should serve as a wake-up call to all of us, regardless of where we call home.
NPM'S theme, "Don't Wait, Communicate. Make Your Emergency Plan Today," is directly speaking to all of us who are striving to build resilient and lasting organizations. Sadly, many organizations have adopted either an overly optimistic, or overly pessimistic viewpoint with regards to disaster planning: a.) our company most likely will not be affected by a disaster, or b.) we do not have time to implement a disaster recovery plan at this time.
