Professor Tim Lenton gave us much to think about at his talk in July. He gave a clear message that we are not doing enough to stop runaway climate change and we need to focus on what will make a difference.

After a good summer break, Wivey Action on Climate are planning a number of events, aiming both to make a contribution in our community and to influence the wider world. See reports below.

Our first local event is give or take for free this Saturday (10 Sept) from 11am at Kingsmead School car park. Please email if you'd like to help.

We promoted the give or take event at the Carnival Street Market last Sunday from a stall shared with Brendon Orchards. We also signed up more people to our pledge and mailing list, which now numbers 125.

We hope you find our newsletter interesting. Your feedback and contributions for future issues are welcomed.

Saturday 10 September - clutter or treasure

Give or take for free events have been very popular in neighbouring areas and we hope will be in Wivey too. We've holding our first one from 11am to 1pm on Saturday 10th September in the car park at Kingsmead School. All are welcome to pass on household goods that are no longer needed or to choose useful items to take.
We hope to do good while having fun, as giving items a longer life cuts waste and improves resource efficiency.
Further details are on our website. As you'll see, we're aiming to keep things simple; so come along, have a look and do some giving and/or taking.

Protect our future from climate change

Tim Lenton's talk in July was challenging for the depth of its content and its message. See our website for his slides and conclusions.
The professor told us current carbon emissions are likely to lead to a 2°C increase in the global average temperature within the next 20-30 years and more action was needed now to avoid the threat of multiple climate tipping points being triggered. He suggested an optimal policy response would be to charge £400 per tonne for carbon emitting activities to create an incentive for alternatives.

We're part of The Climate Coalition

Wivey Action on Climate has joined The Climate Coalition, which is the UK’s largest group of people dedicated to action on climate change and limiting its impact on the world’s poorest communities. The Coalition spans over 100 organisations, from environment and development charities to unions, faith, community and women's groups.

Future events and meetings in Wivey

We are planning a number of events and meetings and will provide details once confirmed. In October, we plan a Saturday morning stall on reducing food waste as part of Waste Not Somerset, and, for a week of action by The Climate Coalition, we have invited our MP Rebecca Pow on an energy tour of Wivey to highlight positive local contributions and support needed. We're also making arrangements to visit a local wind turbine and have set a date for our AGM at 7:30pm on 22nd November.

Transition Athelney - 'Disobedience' film show on 22 September

Transition Athelney is screening the short film “Disobedience” at the Williams Hall, Stoke St Gregory on Thursday 22 September. The film chronicles several successful efforts to disrupt fossil fuel operations and raise the profile of the climate movement in the public mind. It also contains some insights about the opposing forces in this issue and the role of determined grass roots action in pursuit of change.
The 40 minute film will be followed by refreshments and discussion.
Entry is free, but a donation to help cover hire of the hall is welcome.  Doors open at 7.30pm.
