Upcoming Community Events
NAYA Family Center would like to invite you and your family to join us at the following upcoming community events. These times are special for many as they share and practice Native dance, music, art, food and community.
Neerchokikoo Powwow
Saturday, September 10th @ 12:00 PM-10:00 PM. The site on which NAYA now stands was once a thriving village for the Multnomah Chinook people called Neerchokikoo. It had more than 126 dwellings and a year-round encampment. In June of 2006, NAYA Family Center moved to this site and received permission from the Chinook community to make their new home on traditional homeland. To this day we honor that history with our 7th annual Neerchokikioo Powwow with dancing, singing, and an Honoring Ceremony where we thank our community partners, volunteers, and those who help make our work possible.
Native Professionals and Friends Night at Generations
Thursday, September 15th @ 5:30 PM -7:30 PM. We are very excited for the soon to be open, Generations, which will be an intergenerational community of stable housing for foster children, parents wishing to adopt, and community Elders. Join us on the construction site of this exciting project for an evening of delightful conversation, delicious appetizers and refreshments. Guests will also be able to take a sneak peek of where we are in the construction process with a “dusty shoe tour” of the buildings that are just about ready to move in. Register for Native Professionals and Friends Night online here.
Native American Housing to Homeownership Fair
Saturday, October 8th @ 11:00 AM-4:00 PM. Native Americans have lower rates of homeownership across all tiers of income, and experience vast disparities in loan rejection rates and percentage of personal income spent on housing. This fair is an opportunity to help our community re-establish our rightful homes. This annual fair is also an opportunity for community members to learn about renting and home-buying best practices, meet representatives of organizations that provide rent and homebuyers’ assistance and guidance, and learn about financial wellness, gardening, the HUD Section 184 Indian Home Loan Guarantee program, and more. Read more about sponsorship opportunities and participant registration here.
Gala & Auction
Friday, November 11th @ 5:30 PM. The NAYA Gala is Oregon’s largest celebration of Native American Heritage Month. An intimate gathering of nearly 600 of our community’s closest friends, the Gala is an opportunity to enjoy Native American cuisine, traditional dance performances, Native songs and drumming, and beautiful Indigenous art up for bid in our live and silent auction. The Gala is also a great place to meet with Native American community leaders and our allies from across the region. Representatives from tribes, foundations, businesses and non-profits come together to celebrate our community’s growth and continued success. Purchase your 13th annual Gala & Auction tickets here.
Help us continue the culturally-specific programs and services we provide to the Portland community with a contribution to the area of most need.
