Urgent notice: Desperate need for funding!

The BLC is in desperate need of funding. There is a great possibility that the school doors will close in the next year if immediate funding is not generated, taking away the chance for those underprivileged migrant children to have an education and driving them into a life of child labor in plantations and the fishing industry. This school year has seen promising results with a soaring enrollment average of 75 students, the greatest number that we have seen over the last 3 years. Moreover, the Burmese Learning center, teachers and Andaman Discoveries have begun to build trust and relationships within the Kuraburi Burmese community due to repeated community outreaches and needs assessments. This enables us to increase student enrollment numbers even more and also begin community projects focused on life skills or occupational skills. We are happy to see that the parents’ excitement for their children’s education is growing and during a parent teacher meeting they created a parents’ association helping the families to be more engaged in their children’s education. But this year’s efforts and success in providing migrant children with a much needed education will only be able to grow and support the children in the long run if there is enough funding to cover the cost of the BLC.

About the BLC:

The North Andaman Region of Southern Thailand is home to a large population of Burmese migrant workers who come with the hope of finding a living wage and a better way of life. They are often poorly educated and have to fear discrimination, arrest, and even deportation. Due to fear of the authorities, lack of Thai language skills and legal documents school education stays out of reach for their children. The unfortunate result is that many children work with their parents as child laborers in the fishing industry, on construction sides or in plantations. To break this cycle of poverty through education, Andaman Discoveries supports the Burmese Learning Center. Here children receive education from dedicated teachers and visiting volunteers which provides them with the hope and skills for a better future and greater job opportunities.

Her husband is a fisherman and she stays at home to take care of the house and children. They have been in Thailand for 10 years. For fun, their family reads books together. They want for their child to achieve a higher level of education than they did and therefore not have to do manual labor. In the future, they would like for their child to be a doctor. They have a new baby in the family and are anxious for him to grow up and get an education at the Burmese Learning Center as well.

Both she and her husband buy and sell fish for a living at the local pier in Kuraburi. They have been in Thailand for 11 years and will stay as long as the country remains stable. For fun, the family sometimes hangs out together. Her son received the second highest grades at the Burmese Learning Center last Semester and this Semester, she hopes he will place 1^st! By getting a better education, they hope that their child will have a good future. For their child’s future, they would like for him to be an IT expert.

FUNDRAISING APPEAL
The North Andaman Network Foundation (NAN) and the Foundation for Education and Development (FED) are working hard to raise funds for the continued success of the Kuraburi Burmese Learning Center. This center provides a vital life experience for Burmese migrant children though academic curriculum and life skills. The BLC fund, administered by NAN, can cover up to 75% of the total operational cost of the center. The ideal budget for the 2017-2018 academic year is 35,000 USD and we still lack more than half of that amount. Any donation amount can help.
