Youth and Parent Annual Meeting

What's going on in the youth program? Come find out! Youth (students in grades 6th-12th) and parents are invited to our annual back-to-school meeting this Sunday, September 18 at 10:30 AM in the Youth Room (Rm. 10). Come get a calendar, learn about events, see the newly improved Rm. 9, and update your child's registration and permission slips. Light refreshments provided!

To join or not to join, that is the question

Groucho Marx said, “I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member.” Sadly, Groucho missed one of the best things about being in a church; the people who come here are exactly the same as me and you, funny, quirky and sometimes just needing a friend. St. Mark’s is a place where everyone can be themselves, no better and no worse. Does this sound like a place you’d like to be a member of? Good.  On Sunday, September 18, after church, you are invited to come and talk about the United Methodist Church and perhaps even joining St. Mark’s.  No commitments, just conversation.  Join me, Rev. Jeri, in the New Room (inside the church office) to talk about St. Mark’s.  Bring your coffee and your authenticity, both are welcome.

Acolyte Training this Sunday

What is an acolyte?  Webster’s Dictionary defines it as “someone who helps the person who leads a church service.” The acolytes at St. Mark’s help lead worship by bringing the light of God into the church and then taking the light into the world.  That is a big responsibility but it is also fun.  There are also other responsibilities for acolytes as well. If you are over the age of 10 and want to learn more, please come the the Narthex this Sunday, September 18 at 8:30 AM.

“The Bible Presumes Your Intelligence”

With these words, renowned biblical scholar John Dominic Crossan begins his video study Violence Divine: Overcoming the Bible’s Portrayal of Its Non-Violent God.  This compelling and thought-provoking eight-session series asks the questions “Where did the Bible come from, and why does it contain so much violence?” All are invited to this video study and discussion with Rev. Craig—on  Monday afternoons, from 1 to 2:15 in the New Room, near the church office. The series continues on Sept. 12, 19, and 26. Come to one, two, or any number of the discussions, which will conclude on November 7. Come by anytime!  If you can, sign up by emailing, calling, or stopping by the church office.

Upcoming Dates

Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, October 2 at 9:30 am

It's time to bring your “adorable” to church for a blessing by St. Mark's clergy. This is a very popular worship time for people who love their pets and a time when guests are shown happy hospitality by the people of St. Mark's. Everyone is invited: Please leash dogs, and contain smaller creatures in animal carriers.

Blessing of the Animals is a special event scheduled annually at the birthday of the Italian Roman Catholic friar, St. Francis. He is celebrated for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for his affection of nature and animals.

(Please note that there will be an 8AM Communion Service on the morning of Blessing of the Animals for those who prefer the usual.)

Enjoy a quote of St. Francis., "Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words."
Be a Transformative Peacemaker Thru Forgiveness There is a Youth Workshop sponsored by Normal Heights United Methodist Youth Group on Sunday October 16th from 1-3pm with an Ice Cream Social after the Workshop. Normal Heights UMC is located at 4650 Mansfield, San Diego, 92116.

Please Let Us Know!

Picture-taking and video recording are frequently done during church events.  Some of those pictures may be published in our church publications, slideshows, on our website, or on our social media pages. Can Books Fly to Fiji?
With Your Help, Yes!

Help send two boxes full of fabulous children's books to Fiji! Cyclone Winston destroyed many of their school libraries. At the recent yard sale, there were leftover children's books that would be perfect to restock those empty shelves. Please consider making a donation earmarked "Fiji book fund" for St. Mark’s Missions program so together we can get these books shipped!

New Article Deadline Date

In order to make sure the newsletter makes the mailing deadline, all articles need to be submitted to the church office at smumcsdoffice@gmail.com by Thursday morning.  Please contact the church office with any questions or concerns at 858-273-1480.

Vacation Bible School’s Nile River Has Retreated

By Renee Anderson

The wading pools have been put away but our hearts and minds are still thinking of St. Mark’s UMC Vacation Bible School, Egypt, Joseph’s Journey from prison to palace. If you were unsure of the story, by the end of the week, you were an expert. Each day, an average of 20 students came to St. Mark’s to learn, laugh, play, and with the help of many thoughtful inspiring helpers leave with the feeling of “I want more”.  Our little “Egyptians” dressed in the costumes that they made during the week. We played games like mummy wrap-up and ate a few foods just like the Egyptians.  We practiced our songs we sang for the Sunday Service and then enjoyed some cool popsicles in the Social Hall.

Now that everything is put away, we can resume our daily activities while many of the students begin their regular school year.  But as one little guy said, he’d wished Vacation Bible School lasted all year.

Contact Information

Please be sure to complete an attendance card on Sunday morning with your complete contact information for you and your entire household members so the church office can update the church directory. Please contact the church office if you have any questions.
