Till, Bauer, Simmons Attend Change in Mind Initiative Conference

Three members of The Family Partnership’s leadership team represented the organization this month at a meeting convened for the Change in Mind Initiative in Edmonton, Alta. John Till, Senior Vice President of Program Strategy and Innovation, Jeff Bauer, Vice President of Public Affairs, and Sam Simmons, SAFE Families Manager joined human service leaders from the United States and Canada in peer learning and best practice sessions to learn the latest brain science research, promote strategies to advance science-aligned policy efforts, and increase the pace of innovation in our sector.

Last June, The Family Partnership was selected as one of ten organizations across the United States to join the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities new brain science initiative – Change in Mind: Applying Neurosciences to Revitalize Communities. Member organizations representing the U.S., along with five non-governmental organizations in Alberta, Ca., were chosen to infuse emerging neuroscience discoveries into their public policy and direct services with families and children.

“We are excited to be a part of this cohort,” said Till. “Having the opportunity to connect with other organizations who are thinking critically about applying what we now know – that chronic stress impacts human development – to both practical and programmatic approaches as well as policy and systems change.”

The Family Partnership has already begun incorporating the Change in Mind Initiative’s science-informed strategies which measure toxic stress in clients. The next step is helping parents understand how early adversity affects development and what role they have in helping reduce the transmission of toxic stress across generations.

The Family Partnership Receives Mortenson Family Foundation Grant

The Mortenson Family Foundation has named The Family Partnership as a recipient of its Building Partner Capacity for Greater Impact Grant, a grant designed to help an organization with a unique project or concept that builds the capacity and effectiveness of the organization and that is not easily funded through other sources. The Family Partnership was awarded the grant due to the continual high-quality impact that we make on the lives of children and families living in poverty.

The funding will support The Family Partnership in expanding its adaptive capacity by building a culture of evaluation throughout the organization. Each of our programs and services have measureable outcomes and our approach will be centered on identifying and monitoring the key client indicators related to breaking intergenerational cycles of poverty and traumas – two major factors that we have found to hinder the ability for one to achieve heath and prosperity.

This area of capacity building was selected due to its strong connection to our 2015-2020 strategic priorities and business plan. As we continue to move forward, we seek to become a high impact, high-performing organization whose decision-making behavior is directed by real-time performance data, and whose programs operate strategically ensure that all children and families, regardless of income or origins, reach their full potential.
