Bill 132 - NEW HARASSMENT LEGISLATION SIMPLIFIED

Effective September 8, 2016, a number of new provisions were implemented by the Occupational Health and Safety Act that broaden employer requirements related to workplace violence and harassment.

Specifically (and broadly), ‘Bill-132’ brings forward new legislation on sexual violence and harassment that requires employers in Ontario to edit their existing policies, and creates more rigor around the requirement to properly investigate all legitimate claims of violence or harassment (of any kind) in the workplace.

NCHR can help you create or edit your workplace violence and harassment policies in alignment with these new requirements, and will clarify investigation procedures in the event of a complaint.  Give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

THE ORPP IS DEAD

Previous editions of this e-newsletter have provided updates related to the ongoing development of the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP).

In the wake of a recent landmark deal to boost Canada Pension Plan (CPP) benefits, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne recently announced there is no need for Ontario to proceed with the ORPP – the ORPP is dead.

Under the new CPP agreement approved in July of 2016, CPP premiums for employees and employers will begin to rise in 2019, a year later than the ORPP’s intended start date.

CPP benefits, which currently pay out a maximum of $13,110 a year, will eventually rise to $17,478. Higher premiums will be fully phased in by 2026.

NCHR will monitor and provide updates on the improved CPP plan in future editions of this e-newsletter.

STARTING SALARIES IN 2017 EXPECTED TO INCREASE 3.1%

A recent study by Robert Half Canada has revealed National average starting salaries for some professional roles in Canada are expected to rise in 2017.

According to the study, starting salaries for jobs in IT, Accounting and Finance, Legal, Creative/Marketing, and Administrative/Office Support functions are expected to increase by 3.1% on average across Canada next year.

Employers are encouraged to account for this increase in their 2017 recruitment budgets.
