Smalls/Mezzrow Newsletter - September 19th, 2016
Dear Friends:

This is an important week for SmallsLIVE.  We finally started, in a serious way, the educational component of SmallsLIVE.  We are now in our second week of classes at the Prinz Claus Conservatory in Groningen, Netherlands.  My friend Joris Teepe, who is the director of the program, has tailored his concept to the idea of bringing in American jazz musicians to teach, one new teacher each week.  The best of New York gets to go out there and spend a week working with the talented students of that program.  This has proven very successful and Joris has done many years now with this very idea.  This year, we are integrating a required course called: "Jazz History: The Current New York Scene at Smalls Jazz Club".  Students are given access to our audio/video archive and assigned to watch our live stream and research archived shows that have happened at Smalls and feature their New York teacher-artists.  The goal is two-fold - one to familiarize students with the work of the guest New York artists (by listening to their live shows). The second goal is to introduce to the students the new up and coming younger players that are currently performing and hanging out at Smalls.  These fine musicians in the Netherlands are getting a taste of New York.  I want to thank Joris Teepe and Jan-Gerd Kruger and my own assistant Panas Athanatos for getting this class rolling and making it a reality.  We're hoping to really set a standard for virtual education and the importance of the Smalls Archive for jazz education.

We also had an amazing show last week with Fred Hersch and Chris Potter, two of the most prominent jazz artists performing currently.  They mesmerized two sold out sets at Mezzrow.  In addition, we live streamed the show to Facebook and hit about 167,000 feeds - about two football stadiums worth of humans watching two guys play jazz do.  Pretty awesome.

I hope, if you're not already currently registered, that you will sign up on our website.  Our free membership allows you to watch all of our live streams.  If you're inclined. for $10/month, you as a subscribing member, get complete access to our ever-expanding audio/video archive.  All subscription dollars go directly to the artists and the clubs through our unique revenue share royalty system.  Please think about becoming a subscribing member and support SmallsLIVE.

I do hope to see you at the clubs.  I pray for peace in these troubling times.

Regards,

Spike
