Learn About National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships
Information Meeting:
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships
Wednesday, September 21
5:10 – 6:00 p.m.
Morrill 2019
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is the country’s oldest fellowship program that directly supports graduate students in various STEM and social science fields (for eligible fields of study, see:
https://www.nsfgrfp.org/applicants/application_components/choosing_primary_field)
The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions. Fellows are awarded a three-year annual stipend of $34,000 as well as a $12,000 cost of education allowance paid to their institution.
NSF Fellows are anticipated to become knowledge experts who can contribute significantly to research, teaching and innovations in STEM. The fellowship is highly competitive. Application deadlines vary by disciplines, but are all in the last week of October.
To be eligible for the NSF GRFP, you must:
- be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident
- intend to pursue a research-based Master's or Ph.D. program in a GRFP-supported field
- be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited United States graduate institution, with a US campus, by fall 2017
- be at an early stage in your graduate career
- have completed no more than twelve months of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent) as of August 1, 2016
- Effective as of the 2017 competition (Fall 2016 dealdines), graduate students are limited to only one application to the GRFP, submitted either in the first year or in the second year of graduate school. An exception is provided for first-year graduate students who applied in Fall 2015 to the 2016 GRFP competition; these individuals may apply as second year graduate students in Fall 2016 to the 2017 GRFP competition, if they are otherwise eligible.
- meet all other eligibility requirements as set forth in the current Program Solicitation
The information meeting will share information about the fellowship, the application process, and strategies for completing the application.
