Recognizing Indigenous Literacy: Foundational Learning for Indigenous Adults

How can we work with indigenous learners? Come and join us for to hear about 'investment strategy and framework for Indigenous literacy’, a Calgary Learns funded research project.

Who should attend: Current funded initiatives/programs; future funded programs; those interested in pursuing partnerships that look at foundational, literacy or essential skills building in their programs; those interested in cross-sectoral partnerships; those interested in learning about the research project and findings.
  • Learn about building intentional Cultural Authenticity and Integrity into your literacy and foundational learning programs
  • Come to know the role and responsibilities of Allyship as a non-Indigenous agency or individual
  • Understand the teachings from our Elder Advisers that will guide future funded programs of Calgary Learns, and what changes to expect in future funding proposals
  • Celebrate with us the strategic direction and hear how we will move forward with it
We will have a few display copies on hand at the event, but will post the document in it's entirety on our website after the launch, along with a draft of our response to the recommendations.

Date: Thursday, October 13
Time:  9 AM - 12 PM
Location: CNIB, 15 Colonel Baker Pl NE, Calgary (map)

Lunch time = Resource Fair

We've been hearing a lot that people would like to know what other organizations are offering in foundational adult learning. Do you have something to share with your colleagues? Or maybe you are looking for the perfect next step for some of your learners. To help with this, we will offer the attendees the opportunity to display and/or provide information to the other event participants during the lunch hour. We hope to start this tradition and continue this for all our events.
Time: 12 - 1 pm

Afternoon session = Community Consultation

Lots has happened in the last 3 years and ... we want to check in!!
In 2013 Calgary Learns did a needs assessment. We will quickly summarize our findings from then. More importantly we want to check where you are today and what you think your needs will be in the near future. We plan to discuss what can be done to support these needs and how these can make a difference for your learners. We also want to know where we should concentrate our efforts if we would offer more professional development.
We're looking forward to your input!!
