Against Scams Partnership

The National Trading Standards (NTS) Scams Team has recently selected East Sussex as a pilot area to roll out the Against Scams Partnership initiative (ESASP).  The project is being commissioned and led by East Sussex Trading Standards with assistance from the Safer East Sussex Team.

For information, there are two other ASPs in the UK, one in the Isle of Wight, the other in Wales, and more will follow.  The ESASP, however, is planned to be the flagship pilot project, one that can be rolled out to other UK local authorities with whom the NTS Scams Team already has partnership agreements in place.

The aim of the ESASP is to bring together organisations from the public and private sectors, the voluntary sector, community groups, residents etc. in the county over the next six months to raise a concerted heightened awareness about the different sort of mass marketing scams being experienced by many residents and to help protect people in vulnerable circumstances.

Each organisation will be asked to sign up to a charter, indicating their willingness to work together in partnership.  The ESASP will work with charter parties to share key messages and try to avoid duplication. Partners will include Age UK, Citizens Advice, the banking industry and utility companies.

If you would like to receive details about the East Sussex Against Scams Partnership Charter and how you could help raise awareness about scams, please email
elaine.bowdery@eastsussex.gov.uk.

Standing Up to Modern Slavery

Standing Up to Modern Slavery is a free film resource for public authorities in the South East.

Public sector staff are a huge resource and can play an important role in identifying signs of slavery. Consistent, effective reporting of potential slavery is vital to help the police clamp down on criminals who are making immense profits from exploiting their victims.

To help authorities respond to the new duty, the South East Strategic Partnership for Migration (SESPM) and South East England Councils (SEEC) have produced a 2-minute film aimed at public authorities.

The film – accredited by the UK’s Independent Anti Slavery Commissioner, Kevin Hyland OBE – aims to raise awareness among staff, stimulate their professional curiosity and highlight some of the warning signs they may encounter in their everyday working lives.

If you are interested in receiving the film as a download or for more details on this project contact Roy Millard at SESPM: roymillard@secouncils.gov.uk

materials from the SESPM and SEEC on Modern Slavery, please visit their web page.

Domestic, Sexual Violence & Abuse and Violence against Women and Girls

16 Days of Action to Eliminate Violence against Women and Girls

The 16 Days of Action for the Elimination of Violence against Women runs from 25th November (the UN International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women) to the 10th December (Human Rights Day).

Each year East Sussex County Council works with local Districts and Boroughs and other partners to highlight 16 Days of Action and to raise awareness around the elimination of violence against women and girls, men and boys.

If you or your organisation would like to arrange an event this year and would benefit from additional help please get in contact and email josi.enright@eastsussex.gov.uk
Prevent

We will be attending a ‘Prevent’ local round table hosted by the University of Sussex next week.

The discussions will focus on the issues and concerns facing charities, NGOs and educational partners with the delivery of Prevent Strategy requirements.

The aim of the event is develop a framework relevant to communities in Sussex and recognise the specialist knowledge and skills of third sector agencies in order to improve knowledge exchange between local individuals, groups, agencies and providers by jointly identifying knowledge gaps and opportunities to develop.
Road Safety

Project EDWARD - 21st of September

Project EDWARD is an initiative for the 21st of September to have a 'European Day Without A Road Death'. TISPOL, the continent's Traffic Policing network, is running the event in order to raise awareness of the number of people who die on the highways of Europe, and to encourage users to sign up to the pledge to improve their road skills.

In Sussex, the police will be deploying marked and unmarked patrols, which will be supported by the Casualty Reduction Officers of Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, local Road Safety Action Groups, and Community Speed Watch groups.

You can help too - sign the pledge here, and we can all save more lives:

TyreSafe - October
The charity TyreSafe is now in its 10th year and exists solely to educate and inform drivers and rider about tyre safety, and how to maintain the pieces of rubber keeping you on the road. Despite being so crucial to safety, tyres are frequently neglected.
Sussex Safer Roads Partnership has teamed up with both East and West Fire Services in order to carry out tyre checks for the public in the county. We want to check as many tyres as possible during October, and also wish to impart the knowledge of how to do it to road users too.

The checks will be carried out in fire stations - keep an eyes out for what's happening in your area.
Update from the District and Borough Community Safety Partnerships

Safer Hastings Partnership

Throughout the summer  Hastings Borough has  continued to experience high numbers of rough sleepers, street drinkers and other members of the street community.

On-going actions continue to manage this situation, with discussions underway with local businesses affected by associated anti-social behaviour.

Consultations are planned over the later part of the summer to gain support for the gating, using Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO), of a small number of footpaths/alley ways that are experiencing ASB related nuisance, especially  fly-tipping and drug related litter. One alley has had on-going ASB for almost five years.

The SHP, together with the Safer Rother Partnership, have recruited some much needed administrative support to help coordinate the range of projects each partnership delivers and the trial merger that is currently underway.

If you wish to raise any local community safety issues please do not hesitate to contact the SHP on communitysafety@hastings.gov.uk or visit its website www.saferhastings.co.uk

Update from the Office of the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner

Restorative justice must be available for all victims of crime

Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne welcomes the Justice Committee’s Restorative Justice (RJ) report which states that high quality, RJ services should be available to victims at all stages of the criminal justice system.

“If delivered in the right way, restorative justice can have a significant effect on improving victim confidence in the criminal justice system and reducing reoffending.

In Sussex, victims that have been through an RJ process have experienced a 100% satisfaction rate and a Home Office control study showed health benefits to victim participants including reducing post-traumatic stress disorder.

“RJ is working in Sussex because the 26 organisations which make up the Sussex Restorative Justice Partnership (SRJP) can all see the benefit of this approach and are committed to making it work for nearly all victims of crime. They consult with each other and share best practise via our three RJ hubs located at Bexhill, Brighton and Bognor Regis police stations.

Victim Support play a vital role by providing information to every victim of crime as part of their initial needs assessment and there is an excellent relationship with colleagues in prisons, probation and the police.

“If you want to access RJ services in Sussex then visit http://www.safespacesussex.org.uk/RJ

You can also view a video called “Repairing the Harm” that tells the story of Zoe and Andrew who meet the young man who burgled them in their home whilst they and their two children were asleep in their beds.”

Strategic Assessment of Community Safety 2016

The Strategic Assessment of Community Safety 2016 has now been finalised. The document this year focuses on the risk and harm associated with those areas identified as current threats to vulnerable adults, vulnerable young people and the wider community in the field of community safety in East Sussex.

It incorporates information gathered from those individuals who attended the Safer People, Safer Places event in May alongside relevant data and expert knowledge from lead officers.

Over the coming months we will be choosing our partnership work streams for the coming year (2017/18) and producing our East Sussex Safer Communities Partnerships’ Business Plan.

Our Business Planning Event in September will help to inform this process.
