Ongar Town Council in public vote for allotment funding
Ongar Town Council is to receive up to £12,000 to provide an easy access allotment plot for less-able, green-fingered gardeners - but exactly how much money it gets is down to you!
The town council has been chosen as one of the recipient of funding through Tesco's Bags of Help scheme which has seen Tesco team up with Groundwork.
Three community groups and projects in each region of the country will be awarded grants of up to £12,000.
The money comes from the 5p carrier bag charge and means the money goes directly back into the local community.
Ongar Town Council's project is to create a disabled, easy access allotment plot for the less able allotment tenant. This will include raised beds and flat surfaces which will be accessible by those using motorised scooters, wheelchairs or walking frames.
The plots will be available to both individuals and groups and clubs.
The council’s project (along with the other two successful projects in the region) go forward to a public vote in Tesco stores with customers deciding the outcome.
The public can vote for their favourite project in-store at Ongar's Tesco Express store from September 26 to October 9 with the amount of funding for each project announced by the end of October.
The project with the highest number of votes across the region will receive £12,000, the second placed project £10,000 and the third placed project £8,000.
Ongar Town Council chairman Jim Browning said: "I am thrilled that the council has been shortlisted for this funding and would encourage Tesco shoppers to vote for us when they go in-store.
"We plan to use the money to create an allotment plot at Castle Street that will be accessible to all. Allotments are a great way of making friends and growing produce and flowers.
"The council is pleased that a plot will soon be available to be accessed by those less able."
