Michaelmas Celebration - Bread and Sunflower Donations Needed

Michaelmas will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 5th this year.  We are in need of sunflower heads for seed shucking and, a personal favorite, we need lots of bread donations to make our wonderful dragon feast!  Below is a standard Michaelmas bread recipe, but please feel free to create your own (no nuts, please) or modify this recipe to your own taste.

Bread and sunflower donations can be dropped off in the cafeteria on Tuesday, Oct. 4th or bring them in Wednesday morning and stay for the play and celebration!

Ingredients:

6 c flour (we used white whole wheat)
2 c warm milk
1 tsp. raw sugar
5 tsp. dry yeast
1/4 c melted butter
1 tsp sea salt
1/3 c raw sugar
1/2 c golden raisins (or more! you could use dried apricots or even cheddar cheese for a savory bread)
1 egg yolk
1/4 c sunflower seeds (you can use pumpkin seeds, or sesame)

-Measure the flour into a big mixing bowl. Set this aside.
-Dissolve the teaspoon of sugar and the yeast into the cup of warm milk. When it is frothy, stir the butter in as well. Set this aside.
-Place the sugar and salt together in a small bowl. Set aside.
-Place the raisins, egg yolk, and seeds each in their own small bowl. Set these aside.

-Arrange all the small bowls near the big mixing bowl of flour, light a candle and begin the story.
-At the end of the story, the dough is ready for its first rising...cover it with a damp cloth and leave it in a warm place for 1 hour.
-Punch it down, shape it (on a baking sheet) and leave it to rise again (about 30 minutes)
-Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes to an hour depending on how you divided up the dough (several small loaves or one huge one?) Bread is done when you tap the underside and hear a hollow sound

Running Club

I have been approached by multiple students and parents regarding a Cincinnati Waldorf School cross country team.  The season is already underway for this year, but I would like to start making plans to be ready for Fall of 2017.  We can begin by creating a Running Club.  If your child is interested, please send me an email at joethomas1311@gmail.com.  The cross country team will consist mostly of 6th – 8th graders, but the running club can include 4th and 5th as well.  I will need parent volunteers to lead the Running Club and organize the practice schedule.  Please email me if interested or if you have any questions.
Thanks,

Joe Thomas

Snack Shack

As our service to the CWS community and fundraiser for our future 8th grade trip, the 6th grade welcomes you to purchase their delectable sweet and savory treats and coffee from 8am-3pm everyday in the Snack Shack, located in the CWS Community Room. Your support is greatly appreciated!!!

Learning Links Grant

We are thrilled to announce that the Cincinnati Waldorf School is once again the recipient of a $1,000 Learning Links grant from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation. This program funds small grants to teachers and other educators allowing them to provide creative programs or special events. These much needed resources will be applied to realize exciting Eurythmy performances for grades 1-8 which highlight movement, puppetry and speech. Join us in thanking the Greater Cincinnati Foundation for their generosity!

Student Council Call for Artwork Submissions

This year the student council is working to create a Cincinnati Waldorf School Student Artwork calendar to help raise money for future student council service projects.  We are currently seeking artwork submissions from current CWS students from any grade level.  The student council reps will select 12 entries to include in the calendar, which will be published and available for sale in early December.

To submit artwork, please email a photograph of the work to Jess Prussia in the main office at office@cincinnatiwaldorfschool.org  Include the student name and grade.  All submissions are due by the end of the school day on Friday, November 4th!  Please limit one entry per student.  Students may bring artwork to the main office for Ms. Jess to photograph if they are unable to send a picture from home.

Grade Two ~ The second grade has been crafting swords and sheaths and rehearsing for the Michaelmas play, along with hopping into the pond like frogs and counting how many eyes and legs are in the pond (ie counting by twos and fours).
Grade Three ~ Third Grade is hard at work on reviewing math. We are working on our multiplication tables, place value, and addition and subtraction facts! We are also learning about the calendar.
Grade Four ~ Grade four just finished a local geography block where we explored the natural history of the Ohio River Valley region. (The photos below are of us making salt dough maps of the region) Into October we will move into the human and animal block where we begin to understand our relationship to the animal kingdom.
Grade Five ~ The fifth grade is in the midst of studying Botany.  We are learning about the flowering plant through its metamorphosis through contraction and expansion in each stage of its life.  We are learning about the roots, leaves, flower, fruit, photosynthesis and the difference between monocotyledons and dicotyledons.
Grade Six ~  The 6th graders are studying geography and preparing for their European country reports which will take place on Thursday, October 6th from 8:30-10:30

After two weeks of perspective drawing, we will embark on a three-week physics block, in which we will experience the phenomenological through optics, acoustics, heat, magnetism, and mechanics.
The seventh graders have also been introduced the art of veil painting and will continue to explore this technique of watercolor later October.
Grade Eight ~  The eighth grade jumped right into Organic Chemistry. During this hands-on block we've tasted sugars, starches, cellulose. Students returned to Kindergarten and baked bread with Miss Chris and Miss Colleen. We're making paper soon. Later this week we study proteins, fats, and oils. Perhaps a fancy cheese tasting is in order!

Awesome Affordable Housing Needed

I am Suzanne Barker, small business entrepreneur of the Renegade Kitchen, and mother of 5th and 6th grade boys, Hans and Emerson. We are a creative, conscientious and active family.  My family and i are hoping to find a forever home (rental) close to the CWS campus.

I would seriously consider sharing a large communal space with another like-minded family.  Ideally we would consolidate our resources and support one another to create an inclusive and dynamic community.  I love to cook yummy, healthy foods - so meal sharing would definitely be an advantage, as would ride sharing and parenting support.

Please let me know if you know of any available homes for rent or if you are interested in communal living.
