Welcome to the Portsmouth Cycle Forum newsletter for January 2016. In this issue we bring you news about our next meeting, our goals for 2016 and lots more.
Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to the September 2016 Portsmouth Cycle Forum newsletter.  We have an Open Meeting on Thursday 22nd September.

Portsmouth Cycle Forum is a volunteer group, always looking for new people to get involved. You can sign up as a member on our website. Remember we are an independent campaign group and depend entirely on our subscriptions to keep going.

Open Meeting - 22nd September

After a long summer with plenty of good weather to enjoy cycling in our city, Portsmouth Cycle Forum can announce their next open Meeting will take place on Thursday 22nd September at 7.00pm in Lecture Theatre 2 of the Richmond Building of the University of Portsmouth.  As usual there’ll be topical and interesting stuff about cycling in Portsmouth and beyond. We will be updating you on what has happened since our last meeting and setting out our areas of focus for the next year or so.

Hayling Ferry – it’s back!

Congratulations to all the campaigners who have worked so hard to get the Hayling Ferry back!  The service has only been revived because enough money has been raised, but that's only for the first year. The Hayling Ferry needs sustained support throughout the year and coming years. And because it's not that accessible by foot, public transport or even car, the bike is the best way of getting to and from it.

November Open Meeting

Our November open meeting will be on the 18th and we already have a packed schedule including Roger Geffen, Policy Director at Cycling UK (formerly known as CTC).

Solent Deal

You may have heard talk about the Solent Deal and a new Mayoral authority for Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight. It will take responsibility for transport away from central government, along with a pot of money. We are concerned that the Solent Deal strategy doesn’t mention cycling, so we’ll be pressing for our fair share of the resources.

A similar mayoral authority is going ahead in Manchester, and they have just completed an extensive cycling network there. Assuming the local councils between the cities join in, there is potential for something similar here.

For a personal view of the deal please see this post on our website.

Walking in Portsmouth: Learning from Winchester's walking strategy

Do you want Portsmouth to be a walking-friendly city? Come to Friends Of The Earth's public meeting, 'Walking in Portsmouth: Learning from Winchester's Walking Strategy'.

The purpose is to gain public support for a city plan that makes Portsmouth a walking-friendly city, where people choose to walk rather than drive a car, resulting in reduced carbon emissions, improving air quality, safety, health, wellbeing, a sense of community and place and benefiting our local economy.

Urban designer, Liz Kessler will aim to inspire by describing how Winchester has developed its new city walking strategy.  There’ll be plenty of time for questions, and everyone’s ideas for making Portsmouth walking-friendly will be collected to pass on to the City Council.

Doors open at 7.20 pm for 7.30 pm start.  Discovery Centre, St John's Cathedral, Bishop Crispian Way, PO1 3HQ.  Free event.

Pompey Pothole Patrol

One of the biggest bugbears of cyclists is badly maintained roads.  Potholes are always a potential danger, whether through accidents or having to swerve around them.  So we’ve set up a new Facebook group, with links to report damaged roads or loose drain covers.  Please follow this link.
