Supporting our work

Your kindness is helping even more people this year
Alumni like you are very supportive. Thanks to you, we can give out even more bursaries, scholarships and project funding this year, meaning more students will get the help they need. At least 60 students will soon be opening emails telling them they’ll receive scholarships or bursaries this year. Imagine the smiles when they read those emails. They’ll be feeling the weight come off their shoulders thanks to your kindness. And alumni like you have also made possible around 40 projects which give our students vital skills and experience, opening up new opportunities. That means even more bright futures. Your donations make an amazing difference. You can make a gift here. Thank you!

Call for Alumni mentors
QMentoring is a great way to support a current undergraduate student, and we are now preparing for our third round with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and our second for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. QMentors, drawn from our alumni community and employer contacts, volunteer 1-3 hours per month via face-to-face, email or Skype contact. Read more about the scheme and watch a 90 second video. If you are interested in becoming a mentor or if you have any questions, please contact qmentoring@qmul.ac.uk.

And finally...

Invest in QMUL spinouts
QMUL has a strong record of creating and developing spinout companies from its research activities. From orthopaedic materials company Apatech, that was sold in 2010 for $330m, to hVIVO and Actual Experience, two AIM-listed companies with a current combined market capitalisation of over £200m, Queen Mary Innovation (QMI) is committed to the creation of new exciting enterprises generated by its academics and students. Plans are being developed for a new QMUL Spinout Investment Fund that will offer alumni the opportunity to invest in the development of scientific, technological and creative innovations. The Fund will seek to invest under conditions providing the significant tax reliefs for individual investors offered by the EIS and SEIS Schemes. Investors may also have the opportunity to become more directly involved in the development of the new enterprises. Contact Dr Graeme Brown, Director of Technology Transfer, QMI.

Did you complete your degree in 2012-13?
You may recall completing a questionnaire as part of the Higher Education Statistics Agency’s (HESA) Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) survey six months after you completed your studies. There is now another opportunity for some of you to let us know what you have been doing since you graduated. IFF Research, on behalf of HESA, is conducting a survey (the ‘DLHE Longitudinal Survey’) and they may get in touch with you soon. Any information you provide will help in reviewing and promoting courses and giving current students an insight into early career progression, as well as providing input to government policy development and review. If you are contacted by IFF Research (by email, post or telephone), please take a moment to complete the survey. The results will be available online next summer. Find out more.
