UMN SDS Fall 2016
New Members Meeting
TUESDAY September 20th 5:30PM Blegen Hall 135 – UMN West Bank

Join us for our Fall 2016 New Members Meeting Tuesday, September 20th as we solidify our campaigns to fight back against tuition increases and prepare for our national convention that will be hosted in Minneapolis this year!

Workers United for Nurses:  Strike Solidarity Fundraiser
Friday, September 16th from 7-10pm @ the CWA Hall, 3521 E Lake St, Minneapolis, MN 55406

Nearly 5,000 Allina nurses, members of Minnesota Nurses Association, began an open-ended unfair labor practices strike on Labor Day. They are standing up and fighting back against a healthcare corporation that puts profits before patient and nurse safety and is attempting to roll back the good healthcare plan that all workers deserve.  Their fight is our fight, and we want to show our support and solidarity!  Join us on Friday, September 16 at 7:00 at an indoor rally and fundraiser for the MNA strike hardship fund. Bring your coworkers. Bring your friends and family. Most importantly, bring your checks and solidarity!  Checks can be written out to MNA Strike Fund.  If you can't attend the event, donate online at mnnurses.org/donatestrikefund.  Event sponsored by (list in formation): AFSCME 3800 - U of MN Clerical Workers, SEIU Healthcare MN, St. Paul Federation of Teachers, Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation. AFSCME 2822, AFSCME 552 - Hennepin County Probation and Parole, and AFSCME 3260.  If you would like to have your union listed as a cosponsor, or if you would like to help organize the event, contact afscme3800@gmail.com

Stand Up Against Islamophobia March | Saturday, September 17th – 1 pm | May Day Plaza (in front of May Day Bookstore, 301 Cedar Ave. South), Minneapolis
Say NO to Islamophobia!
Say NO to the federal government’s attempts to divide the Somali community!
Say NO to Trump’s hate and fear mongering!

Join us for a rally and march to show the solidarity of Muslims and non-Muslims together to denounce the hate speech and hate crimes waged locally and nationally against Muslims. Learn about CVE (Countering Violent Extremism), a divisive Department of Justice program that uses infiltrators, educators and social service non-profits to spy on and criminalize the Somali community. Take action during this election season against the anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim rhetoric from candidates and Donald Trump in particular!

We will start in front of May Day Books and march through the West Bank neighborhood to Seward where we will rally in front of the Republican Party headquarters (2200 E. Franklin Avenue) to denounce the Islamophobic message of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. This protest is a part of a national call for a week of action issued by Stand Together Against Racism and Islamophobia. Endorsed by SDS

11th Annual National Convention
We are happy to announce that Students for a Democratic Society (National) will be holding our eleventh National Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota on October 8th and 9th.

Registration is now open through this link for anyone who would like to attend, host a workshop, or table as an outside organization:http://www.newsds.org/2016/06/sds-11th-annual-national-convention.html

Since our reorganization in 2006, SDS has grown to be the largest anti-war and education rights student and youth organization active in the US today. In the past nine years SDSers around the country have won major victories on their campuses and in their communities fighting tuition hikes and for the right of all people to a good education. We have built large coalitions with other student and youth organizations not only to fight back against attacks on education but also to land serious blows against racism, patriarchy, and war.

Students from around the country will converge to discuss the future of the student and youth movement in the US. Workshops at the convention will cover topics including anti-war, education rights, LGBTQ liberation, anti-racism, immigrant rights, national liberation, and more.

Whether you're in SDS or not, we want you at the convention. Meals will be provided, housing will be provided and travel stipends may be available depending on need and cost. You can also contact your nearest SDS chapter for rides to the convention by searching this link on our website:http://www.newsds.org/p/chapter.html

Students for a Democratic Society is a national multi-issue student-led activist organization. We fight on our campus for an end to high-tuition and fees, which leads to crippling student debt. We demand diversity at our university and believe that our urban University should reflect its urban population. We also join community activists and fight back against U.S. wars and occupations. Get active. Join SDS.
