Letter from the Directors
Thank you so much to all the families who spent Thursday evening with us at Back to School Night Part 2, meeting the teachers of your child’s classes and learning how to use the PLP to facilitate academic check-ins at home. We had a great turn out, and appreciate you making the time in your busy schedules!

As you already know, our top two priorities for our families this year are to build an active partnership between each parent and their child’s mentor, and also to build a strong community of families built on personal relationships. You can see our slideshow from Back to School Night here, where we discussed these two priorities and also made some important announcements.

We spent most of the evening making one big request from our parents related to our first priority of building an active partnership between each parent and their child’s mentor. Please conduct an academic check-in with your child at home once every week. This consistency and accountability mirrors the support that we give students here at school, where they check in with their mentor once every week. By building this routine into your weekly rhythm at home, you can keep yourself informed about your child’s academic status, support them to work towards their long-term goals every day, and reinforce the messages they are getting from their mentor at school. Although the PLP - the Personalized Learning Plan website which we use to help students organize their learning - is very powerful and has a wealth of information, it can also be confusing or overwhelming to use. That is why we created a one-page document to help empower parents to facilitate an effective check-in at home. Click here to access the handout!

Of course, a one-pager will never have all the information you need, so please review our updated Student and Family Handbook for 2016-2017, which you can find on our website at everest.summitps.org/handbook.

We’re making progress on our second priority as well, of building up our strong community of Everest families. On Thursday we released our Directory, which has contact information for Everest students and their parents. If you did not pick one up on Thursday, there are extra copies available at the front desk. Please use this helpful tool to make contact with families in your mentor group and in your neighborhood as we build our strong community. You can also participate in this community building by attending the monthly evening Everest Parent Organization meetings, which will take place on Tuesday, September 13th from 7pm to 8pm at Everest.

This is OUR School!

Sincerely,
Chris Lewine and Drew Moriates

Message From the EPO
Everest Parents Meeting This Tuesday, September 13th

7-8pm at Everest

I hope that you will consider joining us at our monthly evening Everest Parents Organization meeting this Tuesday, September 13th from 7-8pm. Hear from the administration, come with any questions and/or suggestions you may have for the school and come to meet other Everest parents. We want to hear from you...what can we do to make this school even better?

One of the things that I love about Everest is the willingness to change. We heard that evening events at 6:30pm are really hard to get to with the traffic, getting dinner on the table, getting home from work...so we now try to have all evening events at 7pm if possible. It makes for a very long day for the staff who stay for these events, but it is a huge help to us parents. That is one of the MANY ways in which our school is willing to listen to your suggestions and make changes for the better.

Please come out and join us THIS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH FROM 7-8pm for our first monthly EPO meeting.

I hope to see you there.

School Directory is Now Available
Our school directory is now available on the front desk at Everest! Use our directory to organize mentor family get togethers, arrange carpools, and make our community stronger. Come in to school today to grab this awesome resource.

Fundraising Has Begun!
We have started our Everest fundraising campaign. New this year - you will receive an Everest magnet for your car when you make a donation! Be a proud supporter of the Everest community.

We want to make fundraising simple at Everest...no auctions, no parties, we are just asking for a simple donation. What would you money go toward? Here is a short list:

- Camping Trip
- Study Trip

- AP/College Testing FeesAthletics
- Scholarships to cover fees for students who can't afford to pay for these activities
- Everest General Fund

What won't your money be used for? We won't use it to cover teacher's salaries, facilities, anything that would be considered a core function of running the school. Our goal is to truly do MORE with LESS. Any money that we raise will go toward the extra programs that make our school really special. Come to Back to School Night Part 2 to hear more about our fundraising philosophy.

How much should you donate? That is a completely personal decision. Last year we received donations ranging from $25 to $5000. Any amount helps!

In the near future, we will be talking more about how Everest gets our funding (short answer: the state of California, we don't receive any funding from Summit Public Schools).

To make a donation, you have four options:

  1. Make a donation through http://myschoolbucks.com
  2. Make a donation online via http://summitps.org/donate (be sure to specify Everest)
  3. Make a donation with a check using these forms: English or Spanish
  4. The paper donation forms can also be picked up at the front desk

Questions about fundraising? Please contact Chris Lewine or Linda Burt.

Graphic Designer & Website Designer Needed
Are you a graphic designer or website designer? We are in need of your services. We would like a graphic designer to help us design some fundraising banners...should be a simple few hour job at the most. We would also love a website designer to help us make our website more user friendly. If you have some ideas and a few hours to help us, we would love to hear from you.

Please contact Linda Burt if you could help us in either of these two areas.

New Family FAQs Corner

Who should I contact if my student or I have an issue?

A teacher is assigned to be your student’s mentor. Your student’s mentor should be the first point of contact for any student-related issues or questions.

What are Expeditions?  How does it work and when does my student sign up?

All core academic curriculum courses are the same for all students of each grade.  Expeditions is 8 weeks of all day elective coursework, where the student can explore and find his/her interests. Each fall, students sign up for one Expeditions course (or two half day session courses) for the year.  All Expeditions courses are elective, except for the mandatory half day session of College Readiness for 11th grade students.

Back by popular demand!  Automobile collisions are the #1 cause of death for our nation's teens. The overwhelming majority of crashes are caused by inexperience or distractions, not "thrill-seeking" or deliberate risk-taking. This is a don't-miss presentation for parents, teens, and families.

Since 2007, Impact Teen Drivers has emerged as a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the pervasive yet 100% preventable crisis of "distracted driving." Impact's mission is to change the culture of teen driving, thereby saving lives in this and future generations of drivers.

Parents, students, faculty/staff and community members welcome! Free admission. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be available.

Sequoia Parent Education Series events are sponsored by the SHSEF, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District.

HOMEWORK. COLLEGE ESSAYS. SOCIAL MEDIA. SPORTS. VOLUNTEERING. PART-TIME JOBS. FRIENDS. Teens' lives are jam-packed from the time they wake up until the time they can finally sleep, and just keeping up is a daily struggle for some.

BREAKING POINTS, a short documentary, explores the stress and pressures our teens face every day, as well as the unhealthy ways that many of them cope, including abusing prescription stimulants. This powerful film is part of The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids' Medicine Abuse Project, a national action campaign with the goal of preventing and addressing prescription medicine abuse among teens.

M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation will be available.  Parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members welcome!
