Open data: helping you deliver better services

We've been busy with a lot of great things happening within the open data space over the last month and more to come from our Open Government Information and Data Programme. See our highlights below:

  • The impacts of potentially adopting the International Open Data Charter: As some of you are already aware, we’re asking for New Zealanders to have their say on whether we should adopt the International Open Data Charter and we’d like to hear your say. Learn more below.
  • Open Data Fellows: Last week we had the launch of the Code for Aotearoa Fellowships at Wellington City Council and we’re lucky enough to have Vaishnavi Iyer and Marcus Crane join the Open Data team for 3 months to bring their fresh perspective on new solutions for open data. Learn more below.
  • A rare opportunity for an innovative New Zealand council: Over the past 12 months ThunderMaps' 'Smart City' app has been growing in Europe, developing a new solution for location-based open data sharing and citizen dialogue. Thundermaps is calling on two New Zealand councils to pilot this initiative. Learn more below.

ThunderMaps hunts abestos

As part of NZ Health & Safety legislation, you need to aware of hazards like asbestos and make every practical effort to let people know. Thanks to the help of ThunderMaps you could, but they needed the data first.  Thanks to Greater Wellington who have shown how to make the data available... Read more on Paul's LinkedIn blog.

Help shape the way NZ opens up and manages open government data and information

What are the potential impacts if the International Open Data Charter was implemented in New Zealand?

Continue the conversations and add your voice about the principles under which New Zealand releases our open data and information. Join the conversation on Loomio and come along to our Open Data Charter Workshops happening next week in both Wellington and Auckland.

We encourage local government to join in the data an information space to join the conversation on Loomio & come along to our workshops in Wellington and Auckland this week.

Updated will be made on our Twitter @opendatanz and join in the conversation using #ODCNZ #HaveYourSay.

Exciting opportunity for an innovative NZ council

ThunderMaps want to hear from leaders within local government who understand the power of using
open data and are passionate about improving the connection between the council and local residents.

You’ll be able to implement their award-winning citizen engagement solution with your council’s brand on it, and you’ll have the opportunity to associate your council with the European Commission’s leading innovation programme, Horizon 2020.
