Beer Requires A Lot of Grain-Tons, In Fact. So Where Does It All Go?

One Man's Trash is Some Pig's Dinner

The majority of our spent grain goes to Evergreen Farm of Walpole to be used as animal feed.
Most of our beer starts as malted barley backed by a blend of specialty malts, depending on the recipe. After we finish the brewing process, the spent grain is put into large bins for our friends at Evergreeen Farm to pick up. We go through about 8 bins of grain a week, so there's plenty for the farm's pigs. We have also used the spent grain here at Castle Island HQ as fertilizer for our garden out back as well. Brew day helps everyone out. Nothing goes to waste!

After being milled the grain goes into the mash tun, where it is mixed with hot water. This is where the starches in the grain are converted into sugars. The sugary water, known as wort, is then moved into another tank and eventually becomes beer. What's left behind are the husks, protein, and fibers of the grain for one of our brewers to scoop out.
