President's Message

I want to use this first of what will be regular messages from me in BSU Insider to say how extremely impressed I’ve been by the outstanding work I see all of you doing. As I continue to get connected to our campus, our students and the Bemidji region, I am struck by the energy and commitment evident in your efforts.

A perfect example of this was Community Appreciation Day. I had heard so many good things about it, but experiencing it firsthand on Sept. 1, I saw how much it means to the people of Bemidji, including local alums, our employees and their families. I am especially grateful to the BSU Alumni & Foundation, whose staff has shouldered primary responsibility for this enormous undertaking. Thanks also to everyone who helped welcome and host our community guests, including those who shared information about your departments and services.

As I continue to spend as much time as I can out of my office, I was joined on Sept. 6 by our American Indian Resource Center Director Bill Blackwell and Provost Michael Anderson on visits to the Red Lake Tribal and White Earth reservations. Our tours of the tribal colleges and meetings with key leaders underscored the opportunities we have as partners to better serve native students – both on our campus and in their communities through a USDA grant for video conferencing technology. Bill, Provost Anderson and I plan similar visits to the Leech Lake and Fond du Lac colleges very soon.

There is much more for me to share, but I want to keep these updates brief. I hope you’ve marked your calendars for Homecoming activities on Oct. 12-16, including my Inauguration at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14.

See you around campus!

Talley Gallery features work of Natalia Himmirska

“Book Marks” is a collection of Himmirska’s paintings utilizing various media and techniques of painting and printmaking, which she has developed to fully express her observations of the world. These techniques have guided her hand as an educator, which she uses to help students find their own voice through art practice.

BSU once again makes upper tier of U.S. News rankings

For the ninth consecutive year, U.S. News and World Report has named Bemidji State University one of the best colleges and universities in the Midwest region.

In its annual review of America’s Best Colleges, released Sept. 13, U.S. News and World Report ranks Bemidji State in a tie for 35th among public institutions in the Midwest region, and tied with seven other institutions for 115th among all colleges and universities, public and private, in the region. BSU has appeared on the U.S. News list of the Midwest region’s top colleges and universities each year since 2009.

10th-day enrollment headcount up nearly 2 percent

Bemidji State's headcount enrollment on the 10th day of fall classes was 4,865, the university's highest 10th-day headcount since 2011 and a gain of nearly 2 percent over 2015-16. That total includes 4,549 undergraduates and 316 graduate students. In addition, credit generation increased by 0.1 percent and FTE enrollment gained 0.4 percent over 2015 10th-day totals.

BSU's freshman class grew considerably to 820, its largest in three years and the fourth largest at BSU since 1998. The average ACT score of BSU's freshman class increased by 0.52, from 21.39 in 2015 to 21.91.

Official fall enrollment numbers will be determined on Oct. 4, the 30th day of classes.

Paula Langteau named NTC interim dean

On Sept. 12, Paula Langteau joined Northwest Technical College as interim dean. She comes to Bemidji with nearly three decades of higher education experience, gained at two-year and technical colleges in Wisconsin and Georgia.

For more than a decade, Langteau led the University of Wisconsin-Marinette, one of 13 two-year institutions that collectively form the University of Wisconsin Colleges. There, she oversaw all aspects of campus operations, including academic, financial and administrative affairs and student support services. Under her leadership, the college started an on-campus housing program and has seen significant growth in international student enrollment, while overall enrollment has grown 10 percent over the last three years. She also was instrumental in the college’s The Legacy Wall Campaign, which helped triple scholarship funds available to its students.

Minnesota's Combined Charities campaign begins in October

Each year in October, the State of Minnesota holds its Combined Charities Campaign, which allows employees to donate to a charity through payroll deductions, one-time gifts or as part of a campus event.

In preparation for the campaign, Chief Human Resources Officer Megan Zothman is seeking volunteers for a campus campaign group to help set goals for both BSU and Northwest Technical College and to plan events. The group will begin meeting this month with a full campaign and events scheduled throughout October. Employees interested in participating are encouraged to contact Zothman.
