Dr. Season Ellison joins BSU in two academic roles
Meet Dr. Season Ellison, who this fall joined the Bemidji State as the new director of liberal education and of the Honors Program. She spent the previous five years at Northern Arizona University.

Talley Gallery features work of Natalia Himmirska
Natalia Himmirska, an associate professor in The TAD School, reveals a glimpse into her creative process in “Book Marks,” an exhibition of paintings in BSU’s Talley Gallery open now through Sept. 29.
“Book Marks” is a collection of Himmirska’s paintings utilizing various media and techniques of painting and printmaking, which she has developed to fully express her observations of the world. These techniques have guided her hand as an educator, which she uses to help students find their own voice through art practice.

Eight new hires have joined the BSU campus community and four faculty have published new work or presented at conferences in this month's edition of Faculty and Staff News.

BSU once again makes upper tier of U.S. News rankings
For the ninth consecutive year, U.S. News and World Report has named Bemidji State University one of the best colleges and universities in the Midwest region.
In its annual review of America’s Best Colleges, released Sept. 13, U.S. News and World Report ranks Bemidji State in a tie for 35th among public institutions in the Midwest region, and tied with seven other institutions for 115th among all colleges and universities, public and private, in the region. BSU has appeared on the U.S. News list of the Midwest region’s top colleges and universities each year since 2009.

10th-day enrollment headcount up nearly 2 percent
Bemidji State's headcount enrollment on the 10th day of fall classes was 4,865, the university's highest 10th-day headcount since 2011 and a gain of nearly 2 percent over 2015-16. That total includes 4,549 undergraduates and 316 graduate students. In addition, credit generation increased by 0.1 percent and FTE enrollment gained 0.4 percent over 2015 10th-day totals.
BSU's freshman class grew considerably to 820, its largest in three years and the fourth largest at BSU since 1998. The average ACT score of BSU's freshman class increased by 0.52, from 21.39 in 2015 to 21.91.
Official fall enrollment numbers will be determined on Oct. 4, the 30th day of classes.

Bucky represents BSU at Minnesota State events
Bucky the Beaver joined Minnesota State Chancellor Rosenstone and mascots from Century College, Minnesota State community and Technical College, Central Lakes College, Winona State University, Southwest Minnesota State University, Minnesota State University Moorhead and St. Cloud State University at the Minnesota Twins' Sept. 4 game against the Chicago White Sox. The group gathered to celebrate Minnesota State's students and kick off the system's renewed Access to Excellence scholarship campaign, which aims to raise $50 million over the next two years.

Bemidji Concert Series continues Oct. 6
The Department of Music continues its annual Bemidji Concert Series on Oct. 6 with Covalence, a chamber duo comprised of internationally aclaimed performing artists Mark Clodfelter and Rebecca Wilt. The six-concert schedule, which opened Sept. 8 with the Alash Ensemble, culminates with a visit by the Minnesota Orchestra in May. This year's series includes:
- Covalence – Oct. 6
- Verona Quartet – Nov. 17
- Andy Martin and Corey Christiansen – Feb. 3
- Lysander Trio – March 7
- Minnesota Orchestra – May 17
Most concerts will be in the Thompson Recital Hall of Bemidji State's Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex. The Feb. 3 Martin and Christiansen concert will be in the Beaux Arts Ballroom of BSU's upper Hobson Memorial Union, and the May 17 Minnesota Orchestra concert will be held in the Bemidji High School auditorium.
Season tickets to the complete Bemidji Concert Series are available for $45, with discounted student tickets available for $20. Single-concert tickets are available in advance or, if available, at the door, for $10, with discounted student tickets available for $5.

Paula Langteau named NTC interim dean
On Sept. 12, Paula Langteau joined Northwest Technical College as interim dean. She comes to Bemidji with nearly three decades of higher education experience, gained at two-year and technical colleges in Wisconsin and Georgia.
For more than a decade, Langteau led the University of Wisconsin-Marinette, one of 13 two-year institutions that collectively form the University of Wisconsin Colleges. There, she oversaw all aspects of campus operations, including academic, financial and administrative affairs and student support services. Under her leadership, the college started an on-campus housing program and has seen significant growth in international student enrollment, while overall enrollment has grown 10 percent over the last three years. She also was instrumental in the college’s The Legacy Wall Campaign, which helped triple scholarship funds available to its students.

Minnesota's Combined Charities campaign begins in October
Each year in October, the State of Minnesota holds its Combined Charities Campaign, which allows employees to donate to a charity through payroll deductions, one-time gifts or as part of a campus event.
In preparation for the campaign, Chief Human Resources Officer Megan Zothman is seeking volunteers for a campus campaign group to help set goals for both BSU and Northwest Technical College and to plan events. The group will begin meeting this month with a full campaign and events scheduled throughout October. Employees interested in participating are encouraged to contact Zothman.

Beaver Football cracks AFCA Top 25 after road blowout of Mavericks
Bemidji State's 45-17 blowout of then-sixth-ranked Minnesota State, Mankato, on Sept. 10 helped propel the Beavers into the nation's Top 25 for the first time since 2011. The American Football Coaches Association ranked the 2-0 Beavers 23rd nationally in this week's poll, released Sept. 12.
