Newsletter #16

14th October 2016

Kia ora whānau,

Welcome to term 4, the last term of the year.  This is an exciting time for our year 8 students who are now in their last 10 weeks of schooling as a primary aged student.  My advice to them starting the term, is to be the best that they can be and aim to get as much out of the remaining part of their primary school days as they can.

Other exciting things to look forward to over the comings days and weeks is the Halloween dance this evening, our school fair which is in 3 weeks and to end our year, our end of year celebration evening which recognises the hard work of all our students, staff and school community.

As a reminder, all students need to have at school everyday and to wear during the day while outside, is a wide brimmed sunhat.  We are a 'Sunsmart' recognised school and part of that means we will have children wearing sunhats while outside.  If you need any advice  on which style is best, please contact Michelle in the school office.  The office also has a small supply of suitable hats to sell at $10.00 each.

On another exciting note, the school has a new website!  This has been a work in progress over the 2016 year and I would like to take the opportunity to thank one of our parents, Martin Keen for creating this new site for us.  Martin has done a wonderful job collating the old and some new into our new site.  Please take a look for yourself how fabulous it is!  www.arthurst.school.nz

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to announce that Mrs Liz Tyson and Mrs Sandra Darracott our new entrant class teachers have made the decision to retire at the end of this year.  Each have been in the teaching profession for at least 40 years, so this retirement is very well earned!  We will towards the end of the year celebrate this contribution and wish both all the very best in the next stage of their lives.

Nga mihi,

Kim Blackwood

Principal

Room 8
We have been busy this week with Science workshops.  We are mixed up with room 7 students in two groups and work through an experiment in the first session and literacy related to the experiment in the second session.  Then we swap and do the second experiment.   This is a great way to learn about the Science world.

As it is the Athletic Sports next Wednesday, time has been spent over at the long jump pit at Otago Boys' High School.  Also our weekly sports rotation up at Robin Hood Park has seen us working on our discus, shot put, sprints and javelin skills in preparation for next week.

Maths has seen us becoming experts at angles!  We are now recapping number and problem solving.  Although it isn't nearly as hard as Hobbes is making it!!

Room Three
Does it Float or Sink?
This afternoon the children came up with their own definitions for floating and sinking. They were then given equipment and they were asked to make predictions as to what they thought would float or sink. After that, the children had to test to see if their hypothesis was correct. Additionally, they had to give reasons as to why each object was able to float or sink.

This ties in nicely with Volume, Capacity, Density and Probability for Mathematics; as well as offering rich experiences for Writing and Oral Language. However, everyone will be encouraged to think beyond water as an element to float or sink in. Using 'What if....' scenarios should prompt deeper thinking.
Room 4 News

We are all excited to be back at school after the holidays.

In Room 4 we are lucky to have Miss Murdoch with us from the University of Canterbury for a 7 week placement. She will have full control of the class for 3 weeks starting in week 3.

At the moment we love going over to OBHS to practise long jump with our Room 8 buddies. This is in preparation for the athletic sports next Wednesday.
We are excited about swimming starting on Friday. Thank you so much to all of the family members who have offered to help with swimming. We wouldn’t be able to go without you!

Some people have been saving the New World Little Gardens for us and we’ve been planting them at school. We are hoping to plant some things in the garden boxes outside Rooms 7 and 8 soon. Some children have been bringing seeds from home or seeds they have found outside. Ananiah brought 2 pumpkin seeds from home and they have both sprouted. Most of our plants for the fair are looking healthy but unfortunately we haven’t had much luck with our mint seeds. It obviously takes longer to grow than we thought!

On Tuesday and Friday mornings we have PMP organised by students from Otago Polytech. This is great fun and we love taking part and using lots of different pieces of  equipment.

What is the ANZ Olympic Schools Programme

ANZ has developed the ANZ Olympic Schools Programme with the New Zealand Olympic Committee to inspire and motivate New Zealand's youth, through the magic and celebration of the Olympic Games. Schools will be provided with resources and merchandise to provide opportunities, activities and incentives for students to live the Olympic Values.

In addition to the great resources schools can receive, ANZ has also tailored the programme so their staff can personally help schools earn credits to spend at the ANZ Awards Centre and also secure the chance to have an Olympic Ambassador visit the school.

ANZ staff will be encouraging people within their school communities to support their school and come to ANZ for their next home loan.  For every home loan drawn down a school can earn credits to spend on items from the ANZ Awards Centre, items such as sports equipment or computers.  As an example an eligible home loan drawn down by someone linked to your school to the value of $50k or more will entitle the school to 800 credits. 800 credits equates to approximately $400 of spending power at the ANZ Awards centre.

If you would like to support our school with this programme,
Laura Fleming Senior Personal Banker 03 457 0223 would love to assist you.
