Dear Church,

This week we will be moving from the story of Abraham onto that of his great-grandchild, Joseph - of the technicolor dreamcoat fame.  We will hear excerpts from the story in Genesis 37-50 and I will be preaching on the confusion found in Genesis 50.15-21.  The LORD promised Abraham that he would be a blessing, that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars, and that his descendants would dwell in the land we now call Israel.  At a late age Abraham and Sarah had a son, Isaac.  Isaac would marry Rebecca and have twins – Jacob and Esau.  Jacob, later re-named Israel, would have twelve sons.  Jacob is the patriarch of the Israelites.

In today’s reading we catch the tail-end of the story of Jacob’s twelve sons.  Joseph, the youngest, was Jacob’s favorite, and he had a special gift to see visions and interpret dreams.  His brothers were jealous and sold him into slavery, but told their father that a wild animal had killed Joseph.  Joseph was sold to an Egyptian official and taken in bondage to Egypt.  After years of slavery and imprisonment, Joseph was appointed by Pharaoh as his second-in-command due to his wisdom and special gifts.

Our worship will focus on Joseph's forgiveness of his brothers, and how God used Joseph's suffering for good purposes.  What are we to make of this idea?  Does God cause us to suffer in order for some good to come out of it?  Or does God meet us in our suffering, helping us to make sense of it, helping us find a way out of it?  Hint - I believe it is the latter...

See you in worship.
