President's Message
Hello friends,
Fall continues to speed by - with migrations frequently visible here at Schoodic Point, many of our research projects are focused on migration. This week, our bird banding team has had a flurry of activity, with large numbers of songbirds dropping in after their overnight flights south. They banded 93 birds in one morning, and over 700 for the season so far. Meanwhile staff and volunteers for Seawatch and Hawkwatch are tallying migrants over the ocean and Cadillac Mountain.
We enjoy witnessing these natural phenomena - but this time of year, some of our human friends also depart for the season, and we're sorry to see you go. For some of us, fall and winter are favorite seasons here in Maine, and I hope we'll see many of you here at Schoodic for programs throughout the year.
If you're in the area now, don't miss two great evening presentations by Rick Bonney on October 4 and Bill Schlesinger on October 5. Each is a keynote following a full day of activity; the Convergence Conference on the 4th and the Acadia National Park Science Symposium on the 5th.
Earlier this month, I was honored to join David Shaw in presenting Second Century Stewardship at the World Conservation Congress hosted by the IUCN. Today, I'm particularly pleased to announce we're seeking proposals for research fellowships through Second Century Stewardship. Read below for more exciting news - including our hire of Dr. Erika Rowland as our first Director of Programs,
Sincerely,
