President's Message

Hello friends,

Fall continues to speed by - with migrations frequently visible here at Schoodic Point, many of our research projects are focused on migration.  This week, our bird banding team has had a flurry of activity, with large numbers of songbirds dropping in after their overnight flights south.  They banded 93 birds in one morning, and over 700 for the season so far.  Meanwhile staff and volunteers for Seawatch and Hawkwatch are tallying migrants over the ocean and Cadillac Mountain.

We enjoy witnessing these natural phenomena - but this time of year, some of our human friends also depart for the season, and we're sorry to see you go.  For some of us, fall and winter are favorite seasons here in Maine, and I hope we'll see many of you here at Schoodic for programs throughout the year.

If you're in the area now, don't miss two great evening presentations by Rick Bonney on October 4 and Bill Schlesinger on October 5.  Each is a keynote following a full day of activity; the Convergence Conference on the 4th and the Acadia National Park Science Symposium on the 5th.

Earlier this month, I was honored to join David Shaw in presenting Second Century Stewardship at the World Conservation Congress hosted by the IUCN.  Today, I'm particularly pleased to announce we're seeking proposals for research fellowships through Second Century Stewardship.  Read below for more exciting news - including our hire of Dr. Erika Rowland as our first Director of Programs,

Sincerely,

Schoodic Institute Bird Banding

While the Yellow-billed Cuckoo breeds in Maine, it is especially secretive and often difficult to find.

This species was recently captured and banded on the Schoodic Peninsula. Researchers are studying various aspects of fall migration, including migratory “fitness” of songbirds, fruit and insect resources, and associated plant phenology.

SeaWatch and HawkWatch
Migration Monitoring Underway in Acadia

Visitors are welcome to join Schoodic Institute’s SeaWatch migration monitoring effort in Acadia National Park at Schoodic Point in Winter Harbor. SeaWatch monitoring runs through mid-November.
Opportunities also exist at the Cadillac Mountain HawkWatch site on Mount Desert Island, where guests can take part in counting migratory hawks and raptors. HawkWatch monitoring concludes October 10, 2016.

Eeek of Ecology scheduled for October 29, 2016

Meet the Eeek!-y creatures and ghouls of National Park sites across the US, at Schoodic Institute in Acadia National Park! You’ll find bats, spiders, creepy crawlies, art, games, and more to entertain and educate!

A costume contest will be held for children 12 and under. Prizes for the best National Park–themed costume will be awarded. All activities will be hosted by Acadia National Park rangers and Schoodic Institute staff. Join the fun Saturday, October 29, 2016! This free event runs from 1:00 - 4:00 PM on the Institute campus.

Workshop: Seeing the Trees for the Forest

This full-day workshop on October 22, 2016, led by Richard Jagels, University of Maine School of Forest Resources,
explores how trees evolved over time and how they developed physiological and bio-mechanical adaptations to fill so many ecological and climatic niches. When wildlife sightings may be scarce, knowing how to ‘read’ the trees can greatly increase our enjoyment in the woods, or even our backyards. Register
HERE  by October 10, 2016 for this workshop.

October Brown Bag Lunch

Bring your lunch on October 20, 2016, when Bruce Connery, Acadia National Park biologist, discusses the bats of Mount Desert Island and surrounding ares, and the conservations efforts currently underway .
Brown bag talks are free, and held at noon on the third Thursday of each month.
