Anti-Social Behaviour at Quinton Pools
We have been contacted on a number of occasions regarding the drinkers at Quinton Pools. The council have responded by painting footpath signs and there is now an increased police presence.
A resident sent us these emails:
18/9/2016 email:
Thank you for taking up the issue of anti-social drinking at Quinton Pools. Just walked my dog, and no problem drinkers and a nice visible patrol by two officers.

19/9/2016 email
Sadly I have to retract the good news!  This evening the drinkers were departing, and left one of their number semi-conscious on the grass in the rain. I tried ringing 101 twice, holding for several minutes with no reply. Luckily some other concerned ladies rang for an ambulance which eventually arrived - chap would have got hypothermia in the cold & rain & oncoming dark.

Please would you pass this on to the policing team. As we all appreciate, it’s not good for children to see this - nor middle aged dog-walkers !

We sent this information to the Cheylesmore Neighbourhood policing team & received this reply from Stuart Randall, Sergeant 5572, Cheylesmore and Earlsdon NPT

Thank you for your emails about the problems in the vicinity of Quinton Pool.

As you’ve noticed, we have increased our patrols in the area in recent days due to a number of complaints, and will continue to do so. We are trying to identify who the drinkers are, so if you or any of your contacts know, that would be very useful. It is likely that the problem will decrease as temperatures begin to drop and it is less of an attraction for people to be outside, but rest assured we are doing all we can to bring this problem to a conclusion as soon as we can.

If you know the identity of the drinkers then please email cheylesmore@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk or cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com

Abandoned Car on Wrigsham Street?
Roger was contacted by a resident in Wrigsham Street with respect to a car which had been parked there for a long time. It has flat tyres & was not considered road worthy plus it was also taking up a valuable parking space.

Upon investigation it was found that the vehicle was untaxed & without MOT. This information has been passed to the Abandoned Vehicles Inspectors & an initial inspection will be carried out within 3 working days.

Check if a Vehicle is Taxed or MOTed   (Link is always in our “Useful Links” at end of the email)

Cheylesmore Library Hosts the RSC
On Saturday, at the Cheylesmore Library, over 20 children enjoyed an arts & crafts event that was run by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The children went home with decorated masks, butterflies & pictures. They all had a great time. However the cleaners may not be so happy with the event as the glitter was everywhere!

Rabiyah, the Outreach officer from the RSC, said that the arts & craft event had been offered for “free” to all the Coventry libraries; however Cheylesmore was the only library that accepted. She also said that she might need to “rethink” the use of glitter for future events :)
The RSC is opening a new exhibition “The Play’s the thing” in October. Read more

19 people have now expressed an interest in volunteering, to enable the Cheylesmore library to be kept open. Our next volunteers’ meeting is on Monday 3rd October at 3pm.

If you are interested in volunteering to help run the library then please email cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com

Drinking in Wooded Area by Daventry Rd
Last week, Roger was contacted by another resident with respect to the rubbish left on Whitley common by the football teams. This problem is trying to be solved from many angles.
At the end of their email was this:
I am also noticing empty beer cans, plastic cider and spirit bottles around the 2 small wooded areas at the Daventry Rd end of Whitley common where I have seen a group of men drinking.

This information has been passed onto our neighbourhood policing team who say that the more details and information they receive then the better they can understand the problem & so react.

Please note the date, time and location of the drinkers along with number of people etc. and send to cheylesmore@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk or cheylesmore.ward@gmail.com

All this information will enable the police to get a complete picture of the problem.

Monday Café at Cheylesmore Community Centre
Last Monday, Pauline enjoyed lunch at the café at Cheylesmore Community Centre. She discovered that the food is freshly prepared on the day by 6 adults with learning difficulties. Each learner is given a specific task: make the soup; prepare the salads; make the quiches; make the pizzas; bake the cakes/ scones/ sponge etc
Here is the menu

On a Tuesday the learners write the menu and shopping list for the following week. They then go to Daventry Road shops to purchase the ingredients. Here each learner is given the task of finding the best price for their items.

Please come & support these enthusiastic chefs as more customers are need!

Directions to the café: From the Cheylesmore Community Centre entrance - walk straight ahead past the drinks machines and through the gym

Complete Review of Grit Bins in Coventry
The outcome of this review shows that our ward currently has 38 grit bins. However half of them will be removed because they do not satisfy the “new grit bin policy” approved in 2014.

Roger received this letter from Peter Ullah, Highways Operations Manager:
In accordance with the new grit bin policy approved by the Cabinet Member for Public Services in 2014 we have been carrying out a detailed survey and assessment of all grit bins.

Our analysis has shown that whilst we provide grit bins at many crucial locations throughout the city, we also provide many that fall short of the approved criteria and in some cases we have multiple bins in close proximity where one would suffice.

Attached is a map of all the grit bins in your ward – the ones marked in blue meet our criteria and will be retained. The ones marked in red failed to meet the criteria and will be removed when grit bins are inspected during September and October.

I have attached an example of the assessment form so you can see the criteria we used to assess each site. But please drop me an email or give me a call if you have any questions.

Gateway to Cathedral Quarter to get a Makeover
Wider pavements, Carnaby Street style lighting, new planting and the restoration of some well-loved public art will soon start as part of the next phase of city centre improvements.

Greyfriars Lane (alongside Natwest Bank) and Pepper Lane (to the rear of Cathedral Lanes), will be transformed into a vibrant walkway leading to the Cathedral Quarter, with plans to provide more outdoor seating at ground and first floor level for proposed restaurants to the rear of Cathedral Lanes.

The improvements are part of a larger programme of works to improve the city centre using £2M Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (CWLEP) Local Growth Deal funding and will also include widening the pavement and planting trees in Fairfax Street and bringing ‘Trigger’ the well-known black horse and the 1960s ‘Family’ sculpture back into use.
