Library News
There are loads of new and exciting books for readers of all ages arriving in the library – please do come and check them out!
For the older reader, we have, amongst others, a complete set of Young Sherlock Holmes books by Andrew Lane. These are fantastically detailed and gripping Victorian mysteries which feed in perfectly to the Year 5/6 topic this term.
We have bumper load of football fiction and non-fiction for all Key Stage 2 readers arriving next week. Everyone loves football, don’t they? So it makes sense to read all about it too.
We are also holding a BOOK AMNESTY over the next week – there are 130 library books outstanding at the moment. Please search under your child’s bed, in their bag and behind their ears for missing library books. We’d be delighted to see as many returned as possible over the coming week. Thank you
Ms. Pasantes and Mr. Windle.

Dickens' Island Discs
Hello Charles Dickens’ family. Each week, the whole school focusses on a particular piece of music. Using the music as a creative platform for discussion, class teachers explore a wide variety of aspects to do with the piece. From lyrics to instrumentation, from recording techniques to simply how the music makes you feel.
This week’s disc is a collaboration between an American poet and singer songwriter ‘Short Stories’ and the Italian musician ‘Populous’. Entitled Breathes the Best, it is a song about globalisation and the environment and has a superb video directed by Virgilio Villoresi & Vivì Ponti.

Thank you for your continues support, playing and sharing our weekly Dickens Island Discs.

As the leaves start changing colour and falling from the trees, (due to printing deadlines) we are beginning to look even further ahead to Christmas!
We are setting you the challenge of designing a winter or Christmas card.
Your design will be entered into not one but TWO competitions...
We will be selecting one of the designs to have printed as our official Charles Dickens school card which is sent out to friencds of the school for Christmas. Each design will also be submitted to Neil Coyle - MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark - who is also looking for a local primary school child to design his card this year. Year Five and Six
By Mr Windle
It’s been a busy and productive week in Years 5 and 6. Both Year 5 class and half of Peggotty have experienced life as a Victorian school child on their trip to the Ragged School in East London. It was tough for children during Victoria’s reign, as illustrated by Ajay in the dunce’s hat!
In science, across all classes, we have been exploring the properties of light, specifically how it moves and can be refracted through water. In PE, along with rehearsing our dance show with Delene Gordon (to be performed on the 14th of December at 10am), everyone has been building their cardio capacity in preparation for next Tuesday’s cross country championships.
Micawber Class, began their Computing topic for the term by having a go at coding and making their own animations using Scratch. Joseph Melaku showed particular enthusiasm aptitude for this, and was a great I.T. consultant for the rest of the class.
Additionally, everyone has been enjoying Oliver Twist and learning to build suspense and tension in their writing. We’ve been using Bill Sikes’ death scene as the inspiration for writing some highly dramatic stories. In Peggotty, Lovera, Caitlin and Malachai worked together to produce some fantastic work.
In Maths, we have been practising our column addition and subtraction, as well as looking at negative numbers. Here you can see Melanie in Peggotty showing the class how it's done.
On top of all this, election fever has hit the phase. Every class is in the process of electing their school councillors. Barnaby Class have already elected two school councillors by a democratic process – Joel and Olivia are bursting with ideas and are certain to make a valuable contribution the school community. Congratulations to them! We look forward to the results of elections in other classes.

Year Three and Four
By Mr Huxley, Assistant Headteacher
It's been a busy week in the fabulous world of year 3/4. Recounts have been written, decimals deciphered and rocks were given a thoroughly good examine.
The children have now completed their wonderful recounts of the life of Mary Anning. Each child wrote a series of chapters explaining her discovery of the Ichthyosaur. The children's writing was brilliant and they even got to publish their hard work. The standard of presentation is amongst the highest I have seen so a big well done to all those children who have been practising their handwriting at home!
In Maths, the children have been working on decimals. We've rounded, counted and understood the value of different decimal numbers and are beginning to look at the links between decimals and money. Mrs Fareeda is also very pleased with the children's effort in times tables and informs me that every single child is trying their best. Well done children!
In French, the children have begun to look at the different languages spoken by themselves and their friends and Miss Lucile has commented on how sensibly and thoughtfully the children completed the task.

Year One and Two
Ms Alcock, Assistant Headteacher (Head of Key Stage 1)
This week, we have been having great fun getting to grips with this term's topic "The Rainforest". We kicked off the topic with a trip to Kew Gardens which was great fun. The children had the chance to experience a rainforest environment. We looked at all sorts of different plants, including spiky lilypads; large sun-catching leaves and curly 'drip-tipped' leaves. It makes it much easier for the children to put our learning into context now that they have seen a 'real' rainforest.
Back in class, Year Two have been learning all about different materials and have enjoyed designing a materials monster. Ms Gemmell and Mr Vanson were particularly impressed with Yasir and Hannah's design! In Copperfield class, the children have been exploring addition - well done to Isabella for knowing her two times table by heart and to Raheem for great number line work.
In Year One, we have been building up to our upcoming rainforest adventure by creating a travel agents! Lana created a brilliant poster, listing the opening times of our shop and Richae liked making a pizza that could be eaten in a restaurant on holiday. We have also been learning number bonds to ten and Nakai in Havisham class is already well on the way to knowing his!
We hope to see many of you at next week's curriculum meetings, where we will be able to tell you more about our upcoming year and answer any questions that you may have.

Early Years
By Ms. Henderson, Head of Early Years
This week the children in Trotwood have had the opportunity to paint on a very large scale using large movements to apply paint. These large movements encourage the refining of smaller movements and later pencil control. The children are getting to know each other and soon we will be sharing our family posters so please bring these in as soon as you can.
In Reception the children have been exploring rhyming, perfecting our skills as perfect counters, building brick walls with the perfect cement mixture, combining ingredients to make our own playdough, moving with increasing skill and efficiency over the outdoor obstacle course and on top of all that, enjoying our first PE lessons and music sessions with Hannah. What a week!
A few reminders for Reception parents - please make sure that all your child's uniform, including their PE kit, is clearly named. This is absolutely critical now that we have started our weekly PE lessons. We aim every week to make sure that all the uniform that your child brings to school, goes home with them. This is so much easier if everything has a name on it.
Lastly we look forward to seeing all the Reception parents at the Information Session on Monday (26th September) at 9.00 am. This will be a great opportunity to hear how you can support your child's learning at home. We will also be sending home the children's reading packs on Monday and this session will provide information on how to get the best out of these packs. Have a lovely weekend!
Ms. Henderson, Head of Early Years
