Science Olympiad News
Science Olympiad is a fun, challenging, exciting way to introduce students to science in the real world. There is something for everyone, whether your child prefers to build, compete, research or do lab work.
Time: Tuesdays after school until 4:30. I will be here until 5 pm for those who need to wait for a ride or for volleyball. Students must be with me or in the gym; they may not roam the building.
Cost: $5 per student to pay for construction materials.
Contact Information: Please send your email to mabrown889@gmail.com so I can keep you updated.
Snacks: As soon as the email addresses are compiled there will be a signup sheet emailed to you. Each student is expected to bring snacks once.
Expectations: Each student is expected to come to Tuesday afternoon practice until 4:30 or let me know if they cannot attend, to bring one snack for the group, and to work well as an individual and as a member of a group. Students must respect school equipment and the work of others, use computers properly, stay on task, cooperate and clean up after themselves. I will have a detailed point system to track these requirements.
Tournaments: Dec 3, Saturday, all day at Pembroke Hill. Most events will run every hour until 2 pm, so students who have basketball games will be able to work around them. Each student must enter two events and is encouraged to enter as many as possible for the experience. Based on point totals, including events entered on Dec 3, 15 team members and 2 alternates will advance to the regional tournament at Johnson County Community College on Saturday, February 25. If the team does really well at that tournament, we will advance to the state tournament at Wichita State University in April. Anyone who individually wins a first place in the regional will advance to state, regardless of whether or not the team advances. Much more information will be sent to you as those dates approach.
Rules: Creativity and thinking out of the box are encouraged, within the constraints listed in the rules booklet. Students not following the rules exactly will be disqualified at tournament events, so please encourage your student to carefully read the rules.
Computers: During Science Olympiad practice times, students may use computers ONLY for Science Olympiad.
Volunteers: As a coach entering a team, I am required to run an event at the Pembroke tournament, December 3rd. Please consider spending part or all of the day (it really is fun!) with the team in their home room. Also, if you would like to help students prepare for any event, you are most welcome to come after school on Tuesday afternoons.
Thank you for all your support and encouragement.
