Parkville Street Lights to be Converted to LED

For immediate release:

The City of Parkville is pleased to announce that Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L) will be converting a majority of the the roadway lighting in Parkville to Light Emitting Diode (LED)-based lighting beginning on Friday, September 23, 2016. The city of Parkville is the third Kansas City area community to receive the LED streetlight conversion.

In evaluating the cost-effectiveness, system compatibility, technology performance and efficacy of LED lighting, KCP&L believes that LED lighting is a viable option for roadway lighting. Following a review and approval process by the Missouri Public Service Commission (MPSC), KCP&L is now authorized to begin converting Parkville’s current high-pressure sodium street light fixtures on non-decorative over road lights to LED to improve visibility, minimize lumen depreciation and provide more focused light on the city’s streets. Conversion work is scheduled to begin on Friday, September 23, 2016 and KCP&L will need approximately 18 days to convert the 684 leased streetlight fixtures in Parkville, weather dependent. Black & McDonald, KCP&L’s streetlight contractor, will handle the installation.

The new tariffs approved by the MPSC will save the City of Parkville approximately $12,500 or 6.5 percent of the annual streetlight bill each year. Converting the streetlights to LED will also reduce energy use and maintenance costs.

Mayor Johnston said “The City of Parkville is enthused to be one of the first communities to be part of a cost effective intuitive that will help to create safer streets throughout the City.”
