LAUSD Daily reported that Supervisor Sheila Kuehl is joining forces with the award-winning program to curb distracted driving among teens and will offer it free of charge to public high schools in the 3rd District. READ MORE

As reported on CNN, the Human Rights Data Analysis Group contributed to a recent Amnesty International report estimating that 17,723 people have died in custody in Syrian prisons since 2011. READ MORE  

STEAM:CODERS

The organization and others attended a White House Summit as part of President Obama's Computer Science for All Initiative. In support of this initiative, STEAM:CODERS will offer a 10-week programming course at John Muir High School for 25 students and launch a high school cybersecurity course in collaboration with University of Laverne. Diverse Scholar

Executive Director Alberto Roca's 5-minute flash talk won at the Flash Tank of the 2016 Summit of the National Center for Women & Information Technology. Dr. Roca's presentation "Create the NCWIT Summit Student Newsroom to Save Tech Journalism" is based on his experience directing the Science Communication Diversity Fellowships, participating in blogging/journalism diversity events, and authoring a chapter on Using Social Media to Diversify Science. READ MORE

Executive Director Keren Taylor is this month's Los Angeles Magazine Change Agent for her and the organization's work in serving over 3,000 teen girls over the past 15 years. 
Mario Cruz speaks at the Economics of Public Art forum he organized and moderated at City Hall, part of his work under a grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs’ Arts Activation Fund. Community Partners has been helping to manage the pilot program in partnership with the Cultural Affairs Department and recently reported on activities to the Cultural Affairs Commission. Commending our work, DCA grant director Joe Smoke said his department couldn’t have asked for a better partner to “befriend our artists and to bring a trustworthy, thoughtful personality to the endeavor.” Program director Mari Riddle, is also pictured on the panel.
Since 2011, Community Partners has worked in partnership with Kaiser Permanente to accelerate action by community leaders as they work to make their neighborhoods healthier places. The goal of this most recent learning circle was to empower  educators, community and civic leaders – the HEAL coalitions’ ‘youth liaisons’ --  to mentor and develop youth leaders.  “When Kaiser Permanente is no longer funding this work, who will sustain the healthy and active communities?  Youth leadership will be critical!” said Senior Program Director, Judy Harper. CalNonprofits Student Debt Project

The Forum is a day of training and policy discussions about student debt, its impact on California's nonprofit community and how nonprofits can advocate on this issue. Tools will be given to nonprofit employers and employees to learn about student loans, managing student debt and addressing employee recruitment and retention. READ MORE 


USC Price School of Public Policy

The USC Sol Price School of Public Policy’s Master of Nonprofit Leadership and Management (MNLM) degree provides the critical skills and training necessary to lead complex nonprofit organizations. The Price School is ranked 4th overall and 6th in nonprofit management among  272 schools of public affairs nationwide. Students work closely with leading nonprofit executives, augmenting the classroom curriculum with real-world field work in a program that can be completed in one or two years. The Price School’s Center on Philanthropy and Public Policy and Center for Social Innovation gives students access to leading edge research and practices in the fields of philanthropy, nonprofits and social innovation. READ MORE

Advocacy and Lobbying Training for Our Projects

Just in time for election season, our colleagues from the Southern California Counsel of Alliance for Justice held a workshop at our offices this week to give our staff and project leaders an in-depth look at what a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization can and cannot do in terms of advocacy. Because nonprofit organizations receive tax exemptions and tax-deductible contributions, their part in acceptable lobbying activities is extremely limited. They absolutely cannot support or oppose a political candidate for office and must remain “nonpartisan.”
