Eight dimensions of feed intake
Most articles on feed intake in wean-to-finish (W2F) analyze the effects of individual factors, such as water availability, feeder space, energy diet or stocking density on average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion (FCR). However, it is important that producers understand how different factors that affect feed intake interact with each other and how they can be handled at the "slat" level with a goal of improving pig performance. The objective of this article is to review eight factors that impact feed intake in W2F operations and how these can be managed in the barn.

PIC pork quality program: A quarter century of progress

PIC’s focus for the past 25 years has been on genetically improving and environmentally optimizing factors impacting pork quality.  Our goal has been to design, implement, and continuously improve a “Robust Breeding for Pork Quality” program, focusing on meeting the needs of the entire pork supply chain (pork producers and processors, wholesalers, retailers, the food service industry and the global export markets), while ultimately fulfilling the needs of the end-user, the global consumer.

PIC launches new nutrient specification manual
In August 2016, PIC released a new Nutrient Specification Manual. This new manual provides detailed nutritional recommendations to help producers realize the most value from pigs with PIC genetics. Our recommendations are based on published research, PIC internal research, and large-scale commercial experiments and the manual has been peer-reviewed by 12 world-class nutritionists.

The manual summarizes principles and decision making in diet formulation, lays out how different nutrients can help fulfill those dietary formulation principles and finally, it details how the basic nutrition concepts vary for pigs depending on their phase of production. In the appendix, you will find the latest nutrient specification tables that you can use to optimize the diets for successful nutrition of PIC pigs.
