What a waste
Study looks at reasons for throwing away food

The cost of food waste in America is estimated at a staggering $160 billion annually, with some reports stating that U.S. producers and consumers together waste more than 30 percent of our total food supply. A recent study by Auburn University and Cornell University researchers looks at reasons for this wasteful behavior.

Lose pests, gain wheat yields
By doing just a few things differently, including controlling troublesome weeds like ryegrass and insect pests like aphids, Alabama wheat producers can significantly improve their yields.

As solar power technology continues to advance and costs continue to decline, it may become more common to see poultry farms with solar panels and growers reaping the rewards of this free resource.

AT THE STATION
The Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station has 15 outlying research units located throughout the state, each representing a different soil type and climate region. Here's a snapshot of some of the research underway in Crossville.
Sand Mountain Research and Extension Center

Ryegrass varieties are being evaluated for maximum biological yield performance and agronomic characteristics. This will be useful to producers in the region with similar soil types and climate conditions and to researchers and ryegrass seed companies.

IN THE FIELD
North Alabama Extension Corn and Soybean College

Nov. 2, 5:00 p.m.
The North Alabama Extension Corn and Soybean College will be Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Guntersville State Lodge at 1155 Lodge Drive. Randy Dowdy, the first farmer to produce 500 bushels of corn per acre and current world soybean record holder at 171 bushels per acre, will be the guest speaker.

November Agronomic Crops Webinar

Nov. 8, 9:00 a.m. - 12 p.m.
The agronomic crops team from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System is presenting a monthly webinar on Nov. 8 covering soil and water runoff considerations, an update on biogenergy crops, and soybean maturity dates and varieties.

Fruit and Vegetables Fall Conference

Nov. 17-18
The Alabama Fruits and Vegetable Growers Association's annual fall conference is slated for Nov. 17-18 at the Clanton Conference and Performing Arts Center. The conference will focus on the ever-changing fruit and vegetable industry and will include farm visits and hands-on training.
