September 21, 2016

This past weekend was our church retreat, the first that we've done in partnership with another sister Presbyterian Church (First Pres of Alameda).  We had over 40 of our people join with roughly 55 Alameda-ns for a weekend full of sharing and learning, fun and new relationships, relaxation and rest. We worked through the theme of busyness in our lives and how we are overloaded with to dos, should dos to please other people, to do to get ahead...and what God wants of us: for us to reconize that we are God's beloved son and daughter.  That's the center from which we should act, move, live and be.

The photo above is a almost-whole-group photo Monte took during the weekend. You can see more photos of the weekend online on our website photo page HERE, or on our Facebook group page HERE.

Monte is working on a video of the inter-church collaboration as a model for ministry in the 21st century Bay Area.  He got a few video interviews with Alameda people, but none from CAPC.  If you're game to do that, please let Monte know by [email,] or in person on Sunday.

NEWSLETTER NEWS

This is the second week of trying out a new format for our weekly electronic newsletter (e-news).  Shorter.  Less images.  More links.  The goal is to increase the likelihood that users will read it and to decrease the amount of time needed to download and work through it.  All of the information is still here (images too)...you simply need to click on the "more info..." link following events to be redirected to our website automatically.  We'll try out this format through the end of October.  If you have particular thoughts, suggestions to make or needed edits you notice please email Monte directly at this email link.

This coming Sunday, 10/25 is our Blessing of the Animals outdoor service.  If you can come early (9:30am) to help us set things up outside in the garden we can use the help!

- Monte

PRAYER REQUESTS SHARED LAST SUNDAY

Pray for:

  • Cristina and John Fonua and their family.

John’s sister Mary, has a baby boy Jeremiah, who was hit by a bus on 35th Avenue (near Allendale) yesterday while running after a ball that went in the street. He died instantly, and his family is understandably devastated in grief.

Tragically Cristina and John buried a cousin of theirs just last week, so the death of little Jeremiah makes two recent deaths in their family.

Please pray for the family of Jeremiah in their paralyzing grief, John and Cristina and the entire Fonua family.

THOUGHT-FULL READS

The online reads this week all have to do with the themes that were spoken of at the retreat: busyness, social isolation, trust, community and life together.  Monte found them all online while reading the NY Times within a day of returning from St. Dorothy's.

Modern Housing With Village Virtues

The Age of Distrust

Dignity and Sadness in the Working Class

Drinking to Blackout

Do you have an article or blog post to recommend to our community?  If so contact Monte before Tuesday night of each week to have it potentially included in the next e-news edition.
