Climbing to Success

Twenty six weary Year 11 students and all of the John Hanson PE staff returned to school on Monday after a weekend away in Shropshire undertaking an intensive course in climbing and orienteering. The grades the students achieved go towards their final GCSE PE practical mark.

The weekend was extremely challenging both physically and mentally (especially after a 7 hour minibus trip to get there!), and resulted in both evenings climbing on the indoor climbing wall until after 10pm.

The students worked really hard and have been congratulated on their perseverance, resilience and overall achievements.

Starting Young

Today, Year 7 have been involved in a special team building day at Charlton Lakes. There will be a full report next week, but in the mean time you can see some of the Year 7s mimicking the achievements of the Year 11s above.

News from the
Maths Faculty

Following the successful launch of www.hegartymaths.com and the excellent work that many of our students are already producing, we have discovered this week a couple of technical issues that you have experienced. We have received advice from the technical team at HegartyMaths and they advised us that in order to get the best possible service from the site all users should use Google Chrome as the preferred web browser. They developed the website using Chrome and due to it automatically updating this makes the experience of using the website much better and less prone to problems.

Related to homework, I have received some requests for parents for them to also have their own login for hegartymaths. If you are one of these people then please email me with your preferred first name, surname, and date of birth and I will then set you up on the website. Your son/daughter will be able to support you with how to access the site, and then you will be free to develop your own confidence with Maths and hopefully be better placed to support your son/daughter as they go through the school. I would aim to turn around your request within 2 working days, but please be patient in the event that this offer proves popular.

Open Evening
Thursday 29 September
4:15pm - 7:00pm

Our annual Open Evening is coming up. If you or your friends have children in Years 4, 5 or 6 they are especially welcome to come along. The whole school will be open for you to see, with displays, examples of student work and staff and students to talk with. There will be a presentation from the Headteacher at 4:30pm, 5:15pm and 6:00pm in the Main School Hall.

Current students should only come onto the site if they are in full school uniform and in support of a subject area. If your son or daughter has been invited to help with Open Evening, would you please complete and return the letter of consent - thank you.

After Open Evening members of the Senior Leadership Team will be leading tours of the school during working days. The tours will run at any time that we have a senior leader available and they are suitable for primary children to join.

Using ParentMail to improve our communication with you!

Keeping parents and carers informed about all that is going on at John Hanson can be quite difficult. Printed letters don’t always get home. Sometimes school office hours are not convenient to your lifestyle or working patterns.
On Monday 12^th September 2016 we launched ParentMail, which is a service used by over 6,000 schools, to communicate to parents. ParentMail is a website, but more important for many people is that it is available via a free, downloadable phone app on your smartphone
ParentMail will be beneficial to you because:

Messages will get to you reliably and on time
You will be able to make Parents’ Evening bookings through it
ParentMail can be used for trip permission slips
We can send messages directly to your phone via the app
You can respond easily to messages from school
It should provide an easy way to inform the school about student absence
The App is available for both Android and iPhone – you just need to search for ‘John Hanson’ in the app store and download the familiar logo. (Don’t search for ParentMail).
