Safe Cycling

The fastest growing sport in South Africa is cycling, and according to some reports it might even surpass golf in being the sport of choice for corporates. Some people in SA choose to cycle as a mode of transport because it is economical and an alternative to walking in remote areas without public transport.

Although there are health and economic benefits to cycling, cyclists are very vulnerable on the road.

SADD advocate for the safety of all vulnerable road users, which includes cyclists. The safety of cyclists is paramount and it is important for them to be recognized as traffic on the road. Cyclists are especially vulnerable as drink drivers often leave parties early in the morning and their peripheral vision is severely affected by alcohol.

We thank N3TC for their continued support. Our combined safe cycling project is designed to teach motor vehicle users to respect the cyclist and how the cyclist can stay safe on the road. For example by using the right gear, how to stay visible and communicating with other road users. This is all detailed in our safe cycling pamphlet, that we are giving to our project beneficiaries.

Victims have rights too!

The need for safe cycling awareness is even more apparent when news of cyclists being injured or killed on South African roads continues to escalate. The carnage needs to stop.

As an advocacy group, our main mandate is giving victims a voice.
Director of SADD, Caro Smit went to Durban Court on the 16th September 2016 to protest and support the families of cyclists Richard da Silva and Jared Dwyer killed by a drink driver.
