A COMMUNE FOR THE SHARING ECONOMY

Carlo Ratti Associati's proposal for IBA Heidelberg transforms a former American military village in Germany into a progressive commune for the 21st century

International design and innovation firm Carlo Ratti Associati has unveiled a plan to re-design a former American military village in Germany, transforming it into a 21st-century commune dedicated to the ideals of the sharing economy. The scenario for the repurposing of the 97-hectare Patrick Henry Village, on the outskirts of Heidelberg, aims to establish a center for co-living, co-working and co-making, driven by a vision of cooperation and inclusiveness.

Life in the Patrick Henry Commune will play upon the benefits of shared infrastructure, assets and lifestyles on a town scale. Leveraging the 1950s feelings of the military village - made of generic three-story housing blocks and detached villas with garages - the project proposes that existing buildings are either refurbished, partially demolished, or connected to each other to shape new, flexible spaces.

Carlo Ratti Associati's project was elaborated within the framework of the Internationale Bauausstellung, or IBA, an initiative which, since the early 20th century, has promoted avant-garde architecture ideas in Germany. The newly-started IBA in Heidelberg focuses on the theme of knowledge-based urbanism, involving also other practices such as MVRDV and Kees Christiaanse Architects & Planners. READ MORE
