BLM Travel Planning Comments Due Friday October 14

The Bureau of Land Management has requested Eastern Teton Valley Travel Management Areas comments by this Friday, October 14.  You can access project maps and the e-planning website with full details here.

Why does this matter to Teton region mountain bikers?

It matters because your comments will help determine future allowed uses and management direction and whether that includes new and/or improved multi-use trails in Teton Valley.

Email your comments to Outdoor Recreation Manager Monica Zimmerman at blm_id_usfo_east_tma@blm.gov If you have questions about the proposal please contact her at 208-524-7543.

Background: Mountain Bike the Tetons submitted preliminary concepts and mapping to the BLM of new multi-use trail routes on Teton Valley BLM lands in Fall 2014. The BLM started the travel planning process for the Eastern Teton Valley Travel Management area the following year, producing 4 travel management alternatives (A,B,C,D) all available on the e-planning site. This travel planning process will determine how the BLM manages these lands moving forward. It will also determine if new mountain bike and multi-use trails could be built.

The BLM is specifically asking for comments on the inventoried (existing) routes and user proposed routes. Mountain Bike the Tetons generally supports management Alternative C and will submit  the following comments:
  • MBT is encouraging the BLM to create and enforce winter wildlife closures in the entire management area consistent with other agency area closures. (November-April.) It's critical we give wildlife peace and space needed in these critical months.
  • MBT is asking some new routes be approved and that some existing routes (ones that are redundant, eroded/unsustainable, etc.) be decommissioned. We are only supporting the new routes needed to create a single big loop/single small loop trail system and do not want to preserve unsustainable existing routes.
  • That these trails are important to Teton Valley residents and visitors because they will offer improved, quality access to public lands; That trail access improves quality of life, access to the outdoors and draws visitors to the region, creates job and builds sustainable economies; That this area can be accessed from the City of Victor via the new AJ Linnell Memorial trail and will offer residents close-to-home (ride-to-your-ride) recreation opportunities that are hard to find in Teton Valley.
  • MBT is sensitive to the Sweet Creek drainage's importance to wildlife and is open to alternative routes and increased closures in that area.
  • That the current lack of management and unmitigated use by motorized and all users is unacceptable and that we are pleased the BLM is conducting travel planning for the area.
  • MBT has offered resources and funding to implement the BLM's chosen Alternative if it includes multi-use trails (allows mountain bikes). We're encouraging and will help fund increased signage, trail planning and construction, more user education and decommissioning of unsustainable, existing routes.
Map legend definitions not included on the maps:
Open
:  Open to all modes of travel, all users, all seasons
Open with management: same as identified above with some type of management.  Management could be adaptive management, monitoring, maintenance and/or mitigation
Limited: Limit by season, type of user, and/or transportation type (motorized - full-size vehicle, atv, single-track; non-motorized - equestrian, pedestrian, mechanized.
Limited with management: same as identified above with the addition of adaptive management, monitoring, maintenance and/or mitigation.

What should you say in your comments?
  • Introduce yourself. Provide your name, address, contact info and context. Say why you are commenting and why it's important to you.
  • Be specific. Tell the BLM which Alternative you support and why. Ask for increased management and oversight of the area.
  • Be concise. .
  • Offer support. Tell them you will help when/if the time comes. (Volunteer trail work, donate, attend meetings, etc.)
  • Make it personal. How/why will you and your family, business, community, use these trails? Why is this area important to you?
Email your comments to Outdoor Recreation Manager Monica Zimmerman at blm_id_usfo_east_tma@blm.gov If you have questions about the proposal please contact her at 208-524-7543.
