National Newspaper Week is Oct. 2-8

This year, we mark the 76th anniversary of National Newspaper Week, Oct. 2-8. The annual observance celebrates and emphasizes the impact of newspapers to communities large and small all over.

Materials for NNW are available for download at NationalNewspaperWeek.com. The content kit will contain editorials, editorial cartoons, promotional ads and more; all available for download at no charge to daily and non-daily newspapers across North America.

NNW is sponsored by Newspaper Association Managers, Inc. (NAM), the consortium of North American trade associations representing the industry on a state and provincial, regional and national basis. MNA is a NAM member.

This year's theme is "Way to Know!" The aim is to applaud and underscore newspaper media's role as the leading provider of news in print, online or in palms via mobile devices.

PLAN TO CELEBRATE National Newspaper Week by downloading these materials and devoting as many column inches as possible to reinforce the importance of Newspaper to your communities.

PLEASE ALSO MAKE IT LOCAL
by editorializing about your newspaper's unique relevance. This can be about your government watchdog role, coverage of community events, publication of timely public notices, etc.
Since the principle is timeless, the materials, new and archived, remain on the website and accessible year-round as a continuing resource.

Thank you for supporting National Newspaper Week. You already know there is power in association. And the same principle holds when associations like ours band together to provide even greater impact -- both directly to newspaper members locally and collectively to the overall industry nationwide.

We appreciate your participation and support of National Newspaper Week.

Photoshop, InDesign and More with Kevin Slimp

October 28 | Burnsville
Register Now!

If you’ve attended one of Kevin’s workshops before, you know there is never a dull moment in the day! Join us to learn how you can work smarter in Photoshop and InDesign. Leave with tips and tricks you can put to use immediately.

The Workshop:

A full morning of Photo Editing, Color Correction & Learning to Use Even More Photoshop Tools
Kevin Slimp has been teaching photo editing since before most of us ever heard of Photoshop. Working on-site with hundreds of newspapers each year, his most requested training is by groups who want better photo reproduction on the page. Bring two pens. You will take that many notes.

Page Design and Ad Design Tips
It’s easy to get stuck in a design rut. That “deadline” thing always seems to get in the way of trying new things and developing new skills. In this session, Kevin will discuss simple things that can make a big difference in page and ad design.

One hour of Even More InDesign Tips
Kevin Slimp worked with InDesign before it even had a name. He was involved in the development of the application and trained a group of 98 newspaper designers in Phoenix how to use the application the first week it was on the market. He’s learned a lot in the 17 years since, and he’s going to share some tools that will increase your productivity and design.

The Speaker:

Kevin Slimp has been training newspapers in the latest technology for more than 20 years. As director of the internationally acclaimed University of Tennessee Institute of Newspaper Technology and the CEO of Newspaper Academy, he continues to stay on top of production technology and issues that effect newspapers. His work is regularly featured in industry-related publications throughout the world. Affectionately called “News Guru” by many in our industry, Kevin comes to us with an understanding of the industry paralleled by few. Don’t miss this chance to learn from the News Guru as he joins us in Minnesota October 28.

Early bird registration is only $75 and includes lunch. Register by October 14 to get the special rate!

Publishers: Statement of Ownership Due to USPS and MNA

The publisher of each publication sent Periodicals Class Mail, including foreign publications accepted at Periodicals rates, must file Form 3526 by Oct. 1, of each year at the original entry post office. If Oct. 1 falls on a Saturday, the post office would expect to receive it by close of business on Sept. 30.

The information provided on Form 3526 allows the U.S. Postal Service to determine whether the publication meets the standards of Periodicals mailing privileges. Newspapers with electronic subscriptions to claim will also use Form 3526.

The required information also must appear in an issue of the publication whose primary mailed distribution is produced:
  • Not later than Oct. 10 for publications issued more frequently than weekly.
  • Not later than Oct. 31 for publications issued weekly or less frequently, but more frequently than monthly.
  • For all other publications, in the first issue whose primary mailed distribution is produced after Oct. 1
All forms can be found on the USPS website: http://about.usps.com/forms/periodicals-forms.htm

**********
Please also send a copy of your 2016 Statement of Ownership to MNA. We use this information to keep your circulation number accurate in our newspaper directory.

Forward a copy by email to Cynthia: cynthia@mna.org or, fax to: 612-342-2958.

Use digital tools to enhance, not replace, tenets of solid reporting

 By Jim Pumarlo

Meeting reader needs requires editors and reporters to multitask, and challenges are ratcheted up in today’s digital newsroom. Everyone is expected to be adept across the spectrum of news gathering – writing breaking news for the web and a more complete story for the print edition, taking and posting photo or video on the web, tweeting about a sports event or city council meeting, updating your Facebook page. I characterize it as organized chaos.

Digital tools can be a great assist in collecting and distributing the news. They should not, however, replace the tried-and-true methods for solid reporting. Best practices remain at the foundation of all effective coverage, no matter the platform. It boils down to setting priorities, then being organized to deliver.

Here are a handful of elements – and accompanying digital tools – for ensuring your news product remains relevant to your readers and advertisers. More...

Transformation and Innovation in Local Media

Nancy Cawley Lane, President
Local Media Association

The story of the evolving local media industry – and its implications for the $133 billion local advertising market – is not always well understood. The local media industry is undergoing a remarkable period of transformation and innovation, but that story often gets lost in headlines about declining print advertising. To help highlight examples of innovation and transformation in local media, the Local Media Association has organized a campaign to share more data and anecdotes from the industry. Here is the link: http://www.localmedia.org/borrellassociates/

One of the key messages of the campaign is that traditional media companies are evolving in creative ways to become more relevant to local news consumers and advertisers. Read More...

Tools for Live Reporting

Thursday, October 13
1:00 – 2:00 p.m.

Live coverage is the latest mobile and social trend to help journalists reach new audiences. Sports journalists can connect with fans via live, play-by-play broadcasts on internet radio. Reporters can enhance their storytelling on Facebook Live with a solid list of “best practices” and tools like Mevo. And SnapChat’s My Story can be used to create flip book style visuals with the latest details pushing your story to the top of followers feeds. In this session we will concentrate on best practices and using cost effective tools to get the most out of live coverage.
