God of the City - A Heart for Greater Nashville - FALL SERIES 2016

A Heart for Greater Nashville - This 5 week series continues to help us understand our urban ministry location and our reach of ministry across Middle Tennessee.   This week, Lesson 3 is REACHING FOR GREATER NASHVILLE - our city is "ripe unto harvest" and we are called to go and proclaim the message of salvation.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25
REACHING FOR GREATER NASHVILLE
Jonah 3-4, John 4:34-36

There is little chance an authentic biblical series focusing on cities would exclude the biblical account of Jonah and Ninevah.  We need to be honest in this message, addressing the fact that sometimes disdain for, fear of and frustration with people in cities colors our view of them.  This can be especially true in times of terror or crime as we now face in cities around the world.  Jonah was also troubled by cultural bias which affected his spiritual view and blocked his personal involvement in the redemption of needy humanity.  This is the message for the suburban dweller as well as the urban dweller, to see people as God sees them, and join Him in His effort to redeem them.  The John passage serves as a powerful visible reminder of the potential of harvest.

Message from Pastor Matthew Dunlap about Tennessee Titans Parking:
I wanted to apologize if you  had any issues with parking this past Sunday.  This was the first of our Tennessee Titans home games and we call this week the "week one woes," in that no matter how much we plan we always have to work some things out before the next game.  I want you to know that we will have everything worked out much better for the next home game which is on September 25.  (For a full schedule see here)

THE ENGINEERING NATURE OF GOD

There are great theological debates about what I am saying in this blog piece.  No doubt about that.  Just how intimately does God get involved in our daily affairs?  Just how much is His hand extended into our seemingly coincidental encounters, and do they really become "Godincidents" instead of "coincidents"?  Does the Holy Spirit really arrange possible things to happen for the advancement of Christ's Church, or are these purely the result of Spirit-led thinking and praying on the part of God's people or just good fortune?

We cannot fully grasp the nature of God.  We are mortal - God is immortal.  We are created - God is Creator.  But this much we know about God as revealed through His Word, well-summarized in the Nelson Bible Dictionary: God is Spirit, Changeless, All-Powerful, All-Knowing, Everywhere, Eternal, Holiness, Righteousness, Love,
Truth and Wisdom.  A good start, right, at understanding just who God really is?

IF all of those are accurate, which I believe they fully are, then it simply is logical that God is more intimately aware of and intervenes in our affairs more than we can grasp.

I believe God is something of an engineer.  He in all of His attributes and nature does the advance planning and leading, but so respects our free-will and choices as people made in His image that he will not decide for us.  Hence, God has "engineered" the possibility of things taking place, but doesn't force them nor manipulate them.  And when we are walking in His Spirit being led by His Wisdom we are far more likely to encounter people and things that He has desired for us than we ever would have otherwise.

Friends, we have just seen this happen for the ministry of NFCN and its future.  If you only knew the full set of details as to how God led in the possibility of Don and Diann Diehl coming to join our Pastoral Team, you would be amazed.  We need to be a grateful people today, for I believe their coming is a "Godincident."  Good days are ahead for NFCN.  And for Greater Nashville, which we so love and serve.  Lord, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done.

Blessings,

Pastor Ulmet
