The season just seems to be flying by. Bins and bins of squash and pumpkins in front of our Market usually tells me that October is just around the corner, and indeed it is. This is the last weekend for our Apple Festival and our Apple Picking Rides and we are going out with a bang! Come join the apple celebration and pick the crisp, fresh and sweet Aurora Golden Gala and Ambrosia. Although we’re rolling into Pumpkin Season, there are still so many apples to be enjoyed.

If you’re stocking up on apples, have a look at some Apple Storage Tips listed on our website. Some varieties like the Ambrosia, Aurora, Mutsu, and Granny Smith are great for long term storage, and if you store your apples right, you can bite into a crisp and delicious apple as far away as February. Be gentle with your apples and choose the right ‘keepers’.

One of my favourite things about Apple Season is Apple Pie. I love the smell of it baking, the cozy feeling as the oven warms up the house and of course, the fresh taste of the apples baked inside. The apples are, of course, the key ingredient and if you are baking a pie, you need to choose the best available apples for your pie. Keep in mind that texture is very important. Baking apples should hold their shape well once cooked and not turn to mush - we don’t want an ‘applesauce pie’ after all. Sometimes, a good baking apple doesn’t taste that great fresh in hand, but once you bake it down it has the amazing apple flavour that you are familiar with. There are so many apple varieties out there and we’ve summarized our favourites here - for baking and for other uses.

If you are interested in taking a behind the scenes tour to see how we make our Apple Pies, join us this Saturday or Sunday at 11am for the Apple Pie Tour. Follow the process of the apple, all the way from the branch of the tree to the filling of a pie.

It’s the last weekend for Apple Festival and we hope to celebrate with you.

Happy Apple Season and enjoy the flavours of Fall!
